The result is a smooth bourbon character balanced by caramel malt sweetness and classic English hops. Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Ale is a seamless blend of Schlafly Barleywine-style ale and our pale ale aged in Kentucky Bourbon Barrels.

UPDATED: NOV 26, 2014 12 oz bottle bottled on 20 Feb. 2014 Nice deep amber color with good carbonation. Good mouthfeel: approaches 4. Obvious bourbon, especially in tasting, but not so much as to completely overpower the nice malt base. Satisfying woody flavors from the barrel too. BBL does dominate the aroma.

Tasted from Troika’s Ghostbuster keg backpack at the 2013 Schlafly Hop in The City festival in a mini weiss glass. The best beer at the fest, I was glad to taste it. Deep amber with beige foam. Very malty, complex caramel and fruit notes, definite bourbon impression, some vanilla and hardwood, slight pleasant oxidation, balanced bitterness but low hoppy aromas. Medium body, low carbonation, full mouthfeel. Extremely smooth and drinkable for 8% alcohol. Really tasty.

Tap at schlafly tap house, St. Louis. Sweet bourbon aroma with malt vanilla and some coconut. Pours dark amber with and light head and some lacing. Taste is very smooth with lots of sweet bourbon and vanilla and coconut notes. Awesome. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On draft in the the tap room at the brewery in St. Louis. Pours a clear light cola with an ecru head. Light bourbon aroma with some grassy notes. Flavors of vanilla and oak. Creamy mouthfeel. Mellow finish with the slightest hint of alcohol.

Bottled 1/30/2013. Consumed 5/24/13. Pours translucent red-copper with a thin off-white head. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, dark fruit, wood, oak, molasses, caramel. Taste is interesting, nice, surprisingly crisp; spicy, hops, bread, oak, vanilla, alcohol (bourbon), barrel, hints of dark fruit; finish is bitter fruit rind and leather. Medium-high carbonation. Mouth feel is chewy but aggressive. No remarkable lacing. Highly successful; the blend of the two widely differing styles imparts many positive characteristics of the component beers. The barreling is also very effective here. Really nice.

Bottle to snifter (shared with the Mrs.). Looks solid; a somewhat opaque brownish-orange with off-white lacing. Smells semi-sweet, malty, grainy, and a little doughy and boozy. Tastes like it smells, but less balanced, with an average (and somewhat thin) mouthfeel. Underwhelming.

12oz bottle. Bottled 7/30/12. Nice malty aroma. Rich and woody bourbon aroma. Smooth lighter carbonation, bigger body, clean finish, with a good woody - bourbony aftertaste. Aroma is ample but not over powering, and exhibits little to no alcohol bite. Moderate bitter taste. Thin light khaki head leaves some loose lace. Hazy brown / red body. Some vanilla. Light maple, brown sugar. A worthy competitor to the super-popular Kentucky version. Very nice to pair with my clam chowder. Gets better and better as I go.

12oz. bottle poured into a standard pint glass. Aroma - Caramel, vanilla, fruit, bourbon (not strong but noticeable), toasted malts. Appearance - Pours with a nice white head which dissipated pretty quickly. Little lacing on the glass as you drink. Hazy amber color in the light. Taste - Like the smell, except the alcohol comes on stronger. Not overbearing, but stronger. Somewhat of a Sweet Tart candy taste in the background. Leaves a strong bitterness going down. Palate - Moderately carbonated, but still enough to sting the tongue. Light feeling, easy to drink, nothing really noteworthy. Overall - I want to like this more than I do, but I just don’t find this overly remarkable. Not bad, just nothing special. After having had Kentucky Ale’s Bourbon Barrel Ale, (which is one of my favorite beers), this one just pales in comparison.
