COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Schlafly Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

Reviewed 3/1/13. 12 oz bottle into a nonic pint glass. A: Pours a hazy straw color. The head is a two finger white shade with a nice, creamy texture. As per usual in the style, it leaves rings of lacing as it recedes down the glass. S: I really like the tropical fruit bend this one offers. Augmenting the fruitiness is some herbal pine characteristics. Sadly, it’s nowhere near as showstopping as it could be (or probably was; the bottle’s over 2 months old), largely due to a lot of biscuity malt shining through. T: A lot of melon, mango, papaya, and guava appears at first, before spiking in intensity at the midtaste. The finish introduces a moderately bitter, peppery bite that’s almost minty at times. For a two month old IPA featuring a feeble malt backbone, this is downright fantastic. M: Light and crisp, yet with a surprising level of creaminess to meld with the smooth yet firm carbonation. The flavors leave the palate quickly as they should in an IPA of this nature. Almost supremely refreshing; if the finishing astringency was cleaned up a smidge, I’d reckon the score here would be even higher. O: The apex of this offering’s hop profile may have been lost - but the thirst-quenching, easy drinking demeanor definitely hasn’t. I’d seriously consider buying this by the case when it’s fresh and in season.

Pour is a transparent pale golden color with a tight white head and big lacing. Nose is a good bit of mango with hits of caramel malts and a touch of grain presence. Taste is a bit less hop forward and has a touch of a metallic twang in the finish. Malts are up front, less grain, almost husky, and a bit messier. Still tropical fruit hops with a fair bit of bitterness in the aggressively carbonated finish.

Growler - Opaque dull yellow color, looks kinda like straw. Not much head on this beer. Citrus, orange flavor on the nose. Strong orange flavor with a hop bitterness flavor to it.

Draft sitting on the Fat Canary patio on a beautiful spring day post death by CC briefings. Murky gold color with a long lasting white head. Fruity orange citrus aroma with a hint of resin. Refreshing taste with lingering bitterness. Pleasant.

Pours cloudy straw with large white head that reduces but persists with attractive lacing. Nose is grapefruit, tangerine, mango and pine. The palate follows a similar path. Bitter trumps sweet, and herbal notes top fruit, but the effect is ameliorated by the rich, creamy body. Like finding a living dinosaur, this is an American IPA that tries to intrigue your palate rather than wrecking, brutalizing or otherwise desensitizing it. The key may be the eponymous Tasmanian hops, which impart a fuller taste than those used farther West in the US. Like other IPAs, it’s an anachronism, but at least one made with respect for the purpose of the brew.
