3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Notes from my backlog: Pours a golden with a white film of head. Softly sweet maltose doughy aroma. Light body with a fairly sweet flavor. Glazed doughy notes. It’s clean, but it could be drier.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
500 ml bottle. Hazy orange gold color. Small creamy beige head. Intense sweet toasted malt nose is full of caramel corn maltiness. Flavor is hugely sweet malt. Noticeable alcohol prescence upfront. Bittersweet middle. Bitter spruce hops in finish. Pretty intense from start to finish. Quite different.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
August 14th, 2013 - A bottle shop in California appears to divide its beer collection into three separate collections. First are the Belgian beers, front and center, projecting their grace and nobility across the room. Then there’s the local and American brews - extreme, eye watering, and muscular. And then there’s the German brews. The labels are humble, even drab, but the beer inside is exquisite, and brewed with care and compassion. Schlagl’s Doppel Bock is one of these meek geniuses, a foxy, orange-red brew hiding under drab garb and a sickly brown colored glass bottle. The smell is shockingly sweet, with tons of roasted malt sweetness, and an aroma familiar to anyone who has taken a brewery tour on brew day, with an added peel of mango for tropical goodness. The palate is fluffy and medium light, with a similarly rich taste of apples and caramel, with a pinch of spice in the aftertaste - clove and cinnamon in the back of the throat, and a somewhat better balanced flavor than the nose. The sweet side of the aroma has been collared for the taste, and I appreciate the discipline. That done, this is a great, rich fill beer, again belied by a less than brilliant label.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
330 ml bottle, cellared for one year.
Dark golden, clear body, with a medium, slightly yellow head.
Aroma of bread, ripe fruits, dried fruits, some honey.
Taste is very fruity, with ripe fruits, dried fruits, slight citrus, bready malts, bitter hops.
Medium, oily mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation.
Finishes surprisingly bitter and dry, zesty, a bit fruity, also malty and slightly alcoholic.
Great! A classic example of the less common pale Doppelbock style. Surprisingly hoppy and with lots of nice fruits. ABV is noticeable, but still pretty quaffable.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
@ John’s Grocery / Iowa City IA --- Clear medium amber, with a long-lasting 1" frothy white head, streamers of lace. Taste is solid - caramel malt that moves with patience through the palate, growing, but allowing room for mild hops to balance. An exceptional Doppel, well worth seeking out.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma is big sweet malt, bread. Appearance is crystal clear apricot with very small fizzy head. Taste is sweet bread malt forward. Clean mineral water and noble hop bitterness and flavor linger. Palate is Full Medium. Still very smooth and bright, crisp. Noble hop bitterness lingers. Overall an excellent light colored Doppelbock. Hard to find and unique example of the style. Quite nice, everything is smooth and just right.

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured from the bottle into a trumpet glass to drink. The beer had a semi-cloudy amber-straw color with light amounts of sediment and a modest foamy white head with shortish retention, below-average cling, but good lacing. Its aroma featured caramel malt and light sugars and candy, along with a presence of yeast, and a blend of citrus and grainy hops with a light floral effect. Its taste was a bit sour and grainy, with a slight floral feel, and light sweetness of sugar and caramel. The beer was fairly light in carbonation with a somewhat dry and thin body, and not a strong mouthfeel.
