Brown beer, with a typical lager aroma. Crisp malty and caramel flavor. It is supposed to be a high alcohol beer, but it is very refreshing. A nice beer even thou I like it with more a subtle chocolate flavor.

I am drinking this on good Friday in honor of the generations of drunk monks who forged this style in order that they might have drunken hallucinogenic visions of Christ during the Lenten season. It is a bright red-brown color, which is quite nice, but its small head is unfortunately limited in terms of staying power. This is a doppelbock alright. It is very much centered on big caramel and toffee malt notes. My bottle seems a bit oxidized and nutty (so the good kind of oxidation) as well, which lends a deep complex character . This is definitely a full-bodied beer and comes across a bit sweet, mostly do to their being only a slight bit of earthy bitterness in the finish. Despite this, it does not come across as overly sticky or heavy to me, although it is clearly a style meant for slower sipping. My biggest complaint about this stuff is it doesn’t really taste quite as big as its 8.5% alcohol would indicate. That doesn’t ruin my day or anything bet keeps this from really reaching the levels achieved by the best of its style.

Pours a dark ruby red with a slight tan head. Aroma is metal, corn and dark fruit. Taste is sweet at first with nuts if fig and raisins. Finish is like a grain bin. Disgusting.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sweet aroma of cherries and fig appeal to this rich amber brew. The malty taste and presence of sweet bread, raisin, cereal, passion fruit essence are balanced with a bit of rum-like acohol in the balance of a sip. Fortunately I do not taste the bitter presence of said hops mentioned by others on this feed. There exists a slight hint of toffee and woody essence, but no more than necessary to round out the session.

Bottle into a glass. Pours a clear reddish-brown with a nice off-white head. Smells of sweet dark fruit. Sweet, fruity malt taste with a clean finish. Really good doppel.

rich and roasty with some molasses sweetness. Appearance is lacking, dull head, but that’s the only bad marks against this brew. Classic doppelbock.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours brown with a slight red tinge of red. medium head, quite fluffy, leaves some nice lacing. Aroma is sweet and malty, notes of caramel and plums as well. Taste is similar, with the malt leading the charge. Full mouthfeel with a creamy texture and a soft bitter finish. A slight harshness from the alcohol is present however.

Interesting toffee-caramel notes, kind of alcoholic sensation, well balanced between sweet malts and sour hops.
