COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Doppelbock Dunkel has a pleasant full and creamy body, with coffeeish aroma. Nicely warming with toffeelike malty sweetness, balanced by a hoppy-bitterness in the finish.

Deep mahogany-russet colour with a white head that attempted valiantly to stay on top of the body of the beer. Significant allspice, carob, chocolate, caramel and date aromas. It is a full, dark and heady aroma that puts you in mind of pannatone, treacle tart or similar dessert cakes by a fire with a cigar to follow. The flavour is all of that with a lovely almost peppery note on a sweetish body. This beer is balanced, elegant and indulges the drinker with a fondness for dessert. In the lager world this has to be at the top end of its nobility. It struck me just where I like to be tickled and will willingly have more of this beer. Gorgeous.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly cloudy deep reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, apple, toast, toffee, molasses, brown bread, light roast, floral, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt notes with light hops. Taste of big caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, raisin, brown bread, light roast, floral, light pepper, and toasted earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, molasses, toffee, raisin, toast, dark bread, light roast, floral, light pepper, and earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance malty flavors; with a light hop balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent doppelbock style. Very nice complexity and balance of malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

330 ml bottle bought at Biere von Irene in Yuen Long.

Clear dark copper amber colour; Very thin head and residual beige foam which fades in 20 seconds; Minimal lacing and active carbonation; Nose of caramel, toffee, plum, raisins and light alcohol, which can be smelt a foot away as soon as it was popped, smell like a typical Dunkel. Sweet taste of caramel, strong liquorices, malt, toffee, molasses, strong alcohol, light cloves, and bitter hops; Medium to full body, oily palate; Taste profile is sugary Dunkel with very strong alcohol and liquorices characters, with initial dark fruit and toffee elements being quickly buried inside. Booziness is very strong in smell, taste and feel throughout, and kicks in less than 10 minutes. Hop bitterness - most likely come from hop extract - is quite pronounced but artificial for a Doppelbock, with edgy, lingering, and close to uncomfortable astringency to close out. Slightly dry after taste; Sweet, bitter and boozy to mouth.

Comments: True to its title, this one is essentially a Dunkel fortified with full-on booziness, sweetness and fake bitterness. These three tastes overwhelm all other aspects of Doppelbock and renders it close to undrinkable (Satan Gold comes to mind). Other Doppelbocks I had were really tasty and enjoyable, and this one simply means shit-faced drunk a la malt liquor. Terrible!

Pours a dark-brown, cola colour. Head fades away fairly quickly, leaving some sticky lacing behind. Smells of toffee/molasses and a note of real liquorice. Taste is semi-sweet molasses, with a mild hop bitter, along with a coffee-ish bitter flavour in the finish. Picking up up some notes of fig preserves in there as it warms up. Body is between medium and full; carbonation is barely detectable. As I expected, another finely crafted beer from Schloss Eggenberg.

330 ml bottle. Pours a clear, orangeish pale brown with a white head. Slight coffee smell. Flavor is malty ; caramel, somewhat fruity. Quite sweet. Well-balanced, nonetheless. A dry finish, which nicely cuts into the malty sugar. Light to medium body, somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Light to average carbonation. Decent.

Aroma is rather malty with some chocolate, burned sugar and hints of alcohol. Flavour has lots of roasted malt, semi‐dark chocolate, sugary notes and hints of solvent‐like alcohol. Decent.

pours dark root beer brown with almost no head, lots of activity near the surface. Sweet and dense toffee malts on the nose. Drinks with dense thick caramel 7/10-sweet malts up front, light roast, toffee, cola, with a gentle fizzy backdrop, airy hops near the finish, slightly metallic, finishing malty and mildly bitter. Low-medium complexity, medium depth, good transitions, decent carry, decent drinkability. Pretty straightforward and nothing ground-breaking.
