Malty aroma, somewhat smoked. Malty flavour, some smoke with a bit of alcohol shining through. Reasonably complex. Takes some getting used to, but after a few sips i started to appreciate it. I like the whisky notes (but hey, i like whisky). Quite ok. Geiserich (1790), Vienna, Austria

Sweet, very malty, complex, some fruitiness and very alcoholic. Well balanced. Really some whiskey feeling on a cod winter evening! SoLan (1427), Orlando, Florida, USA

Nose of grainy malt, light smoke, pungent rotten light fruit, fresh cut wet grass, subtle spicy, floral hops. Unique aroma. Mellow flavor - malt, earth, light smoke, spicy floral grass moves ahead of the rotten fruit, both remain in the background throughout. Definitely highland malt. Soft, medium, balanced palate. I’d like to try one with islay malt. Solid brew, could drink a ton of it. Underrated. drpimento (883), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA

In spite of name, Original Red Ale, has virtually no red color, but does have a nice clear amber. Has a nice beery, very slight peaty nose. Pick up a littleof the peat in the taste albeit very subtle. Very malty sweet and carbonated. Can taste the alcohol, but it’s not overdone. Pleasant. Had this at the Bodega in La Crosse. rforman15 (10), Glendale, Arizona, USA

I can’t vouch for the bottle I am currently drinking, I am in Arizona after all, that is to say it could be a little fresher, closer to the source this is an A+ beer. Out

Bottle brown, 330 ml, 16 P
Appearance: Pours orangy golden in colour, slightly hazy body texture, head is initially big and quite quickly decreasing to minimal, there is quite nice lacing. Head is white in colour. Carbonation of the body is intensive and vivid.
Aroma: Nice focused and intensive aroma, noble sweet juicy maltyness with gentle well build in alcoholic background, gentle notes of prune and red wine grapes, pine trees, resin, raisin, nice sweet flowery but gentle hoppyness on top. Notes of good quality black tea, rum or whisky. Slight bitterness in nose of hops origin.
Flavour: Front is very soft, than there is a great noble malty - grainy, smoked, strong retro - nasal aroma yet strenghtened by the alcoholic warmth, on the other hand dull sweetness is totally reduced, there is a nice gentle bitterness and kind of herbal focused hoppy nose. Very well pronounced smoked barley grains on palate. Finish duration is pleasant and long. Alcohol is playing a great job here for making tha flavour more assertive and its presence is very positive as it underlines the noble ingredients character.
Palate: Body is medium to full, texture is wattery, carbonation on palate is soft, finish feel is very long. beerinmarch (2829), Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 24, 2005 This beast pours amber with a medium white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is very sweet, big malts with a scotch smell to it. I was expecting this brew to have a very thick syrupy body to it from the aroma, but instead it has a nice medium body, very smooth. Very sweet malt start, caramel and grainy tastes with a scotch hint in the finish. For a smoked brew the smoked malts are very subtle, if I hadn’t have read it above I would have never guessed it. Rich honey/pale malt aroma with a touch of hops and perhaps some smoke. Rich malt flavor supported with spicey noble hops, a bit of peat/smoke, and some alchohol warming. Very full creamy mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.Finishes with a sticky malt sweetness and a light lingering hop bitterness. Very very tasty!
