dionysus (95), Arizona, USA Nov 7, 2009 7.3% Bottle pours golden orange with an off-white head. Aroma is heavy in caramel and sweet toasted malt. Flavor is primarily dominated with sweet malt but there is still a muted hop note in the background. Finish also shows slight amounts of peat and iodine. Definately seems to have held for it’s age, but as everyone else seems to state, there is very little smoke, if at all. Palate is relatively full and carbonation is extremely soft. oh6gdx (8802), Vasa, Finland Sep 3, 2009 Bottled (from CrackedKettle). Deep ambery golden colour with mediumsized foamy white head. Aroma is quite strong on malts, some slight fruity notes as well as alcohol. Flavour is fruity, a bit roasted malty with some slight caramelly notes as well. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Aug 7, 2009 8/07/2009: Mac Queen’s Nessie Original Red Ale... Aroma: Intense/concentrated malts; It just smells like a strong Austrian beer (for some reason they all seem to have a common thread in the aroma)! Appearance: Yolky blonde (tarnished gold) color; mostly clear with only a few floaters; small off-white head that doesn’t seem to stay around long. Flavor: Plenty malty, but mostly ligher malts; some light caramel, toasted malts and sweet bread crust; a touch of soft sherry and almond; lightly oxidized in the back; slightly dry finish; alcohol is completely absent from the flavor. Palate: Medium-light to medium, very smooth, VERY little carbonation, maybe a bit thinner than preferred. Overall: Not quite as strong as I was hoping for, but good; not worth the ~$4.50 price though! Regardless, I always appreciate a good Austrian beer!
11,2 fl. oz. bottle (alc. 7,3% vol.) from The Party Source in Bellevue, Kentucky. Rating #254 for this beer.
lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jul 12, 2009 Dark copper orange with an off white foam. Aroma is caramel mostly, a rye mash note, but only a hint smoke. Taste is malty, sweet, a light spicy rye note, a hint of scotch smoke, iodine. But thin overall. Crafty07 (391), Florence, Kentucky, USA Jun 26, 2009 Clear aproicot pour from the 11.2 oz bottle, this was one of the MJ’s classic 500 beers of the world and it’s rated low and classifed as a ’smoked’ when the bottle claims it to be an ’Original Red Ale’
Strange beer, a scotch red ale made in Austria..a bit sweet and sticky for my taste..but it’s another one to cross off the the list! Ughsmash (3983), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Feb 15, 2009 Bottled, 7.3% version. Poured clear, brighter golden with a short, fizzy cap of white head. The aroma picked up very sweet caramel and candy-like notes with a definite presence from the whiskey malt around.. somewhat smoky.. just too sweet overall. The flavor was also too far skewed to the sweet side with caramel and fruity candy present.. a touch bitter and a touch oaky on the edges with mild smoke to it.. sticky finish. Medium-bodied with ideal carbonation to move it across the palate.. again too sweet, but certainly drinkable. Rynoplasty (500), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jan 7, 2009 Pours light golden amber with a medium sized white head. Aroma is caramel malt. Taste is caramel malt as well, with a slight bitter finish, not really getting much smoke flavor in this one though, just a little in the finish.
