JonMoore (1551), Loughborough, Leicestershire, England Jun 27, 2005 Old gold coloured with a slim, but steady white head. Nice aroma of sweet malts and whiskey. Nice taste of malts, whiskey and caramel. Alcohol is well hidden. More tastes become apparent as you get into it; some butterscotch and vanilla. Full bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. Don’t know why the average score for this is so low. Excellent. presario (2447), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Aug 15, 2004 Almost no head. Light amber. Scotch-like malty smoked aroma. Smooth and dry. Tasty alcohol flavour and finish. Whisky malt is very present. mkobes (2039), somewhere, New Jersey, USA Dec 21, 2003 Light in color. Clean flavor. Malty with a spiced hop finish. Pleasant to drink. Some smokey notes too. mribm (416), Hurley, New York, USA Aug 18, 2002 Updated: Sep 28, 2003Butterscotch in color... I'm not sure why they call this a red ale. I didn't get any of the smoke aroma/flavor that others commented about. It had a strong alcohol/whiskey flavor in the beginning, but it mellowed out half way through the beer. Then I started tasting chocolate and butterscotch, which was really strange for such a light beer. This beer started out rough for me, but the flavor really improved as I drank it. I will definately buy this again...very interesting flavor changes when drinking it. In the end, it was a very good beer. Braudog (3463), Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Dec 3, 2006 Pretty funny .. Austrian beer named for a myth in Scotland. Anyway .. Poured clear dark goldne, very active, like the air is hurrying to escape into the huge poofy head. The aroma honestly reminds me of pigs in a blanket ... meaty and gravy-like. Likewise, despite the relatively light color, this is a full beer ... richly malty, lightly smoky. Me thinks very many previous raters rated this as if they were expecting a big sugary Scotch ale instead of the subtle, artfully smoked ale they received. This is excellent.
