SFLpunk (132), South Burlington, Vermont, USA Jan 22, 2009 750mL painted brown glass swingtop. "Bottled in 2007." This is one of 12 bottles that came into the state of Vermont recently.
Appearance: Almost no carbonation. A clear, orange/gold hue that gets thin and watery at the rim, going more burnt yellow towards the edges.
Nose: Sweet Jesus! Candy malt, light caramel, yellow plantains, a quick zip of licorice, candied orange peel, and some prickly alcohol.
Palate: Medium bodied, almost no carbonation, and a little hot and sweet up front. As the sugar-shock fades, toasty malt notes come out. A little creme brulée, Marcona almonds, a faint whisper of citrus, a touch of ripe banana, and sweet buttered oak. A warming finish of alcohol carries the flavors on for minutes after the sip.
Notes: At 14% ABV, this beer is surprisingly balanced. It’s hot, and a little prickly, but it doesn’t feel like 14. 10 maybe. The finish is incredibly long, and the ageability of this beer is out of this world. I might have to buy some for my children...maybe it will be mature by then!
Oh man. The finish is amazing. The banana/plantain thing comes in and out of focus for minutes after the sip. I’m going to go make some seared dry-rubbed Pollack and some red beans and rice to have with this! Crosling (1854), Loveland, Colorado, USA Jan 21, 2009 Pale colored beer with a thin, wispy white foam. Strong malt aroma hints of light golden fruits and caramel. Flavor is intensely sweet and intensely flavored. Nicely balanced, with well hidden alcohol, this beauty deliverers strong, complex malt notes of golden raisin, caramel and toffee. Should drink well for a decade. Bockyhorsey (2487), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jan 21, 2009 Bottle. Aroma od sour frutis and some spice. Gold body with white disipating head. Some sound from this one thus the 5 for appearance. Bubble action thought brew. Till 3/4 of beer could hear don’t know why I got a brew this close to ear wax but had the sound of rice crispies or pop rocks. Near the fishish those winter winds howling outside thehouse reminds me of Jan in Wisconsin. Different to say the least. Flavor has some sour to it along with a thickening sugar candy laquer. Aftertaste of sticky spicey candy lingers on the palate. Jonpol says must try and I did. pilsnerrogge (1770), Finspång, Sweden Jan 19, 2009 Bottle: Pours deep golden with a smallish head. Sweet and malty aroma with notes of cloudberries. Flavour is sweet, chewy malt with notes of cloudberries and honey. The alcohol gives it a warming finish. mjg74 (1995), La Mesa, California, USA Jan 11, 2009 Bottle(2007) from Windmill Farms. Light color upon pouring. Very slick looking with low carbonation. Aroma is extremely sweet with a little alcohol. Sweet flavor up front. Smooth mouthfeel. A little bit of alcohol. Pretty potent and flavorful. Nice little sipper. larsniclas (3383), Gothenburg, Sweden Jan 10, 2009 [Bottled]
Dark orange. Small white head.
Warm, vinous, fruity aroma.
Thick and oily palate.
Very sweet, with notes of honey, and malty with a bit too much alcohol in the finish. bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA Jan 6, 2009 (330ml bottle, 2007 vintage, courtesy of blutt59) Pours a clear golden body with a spare white head. Aroma of apple, alcohol burn, and mustiness. Flavor of yeast, fruitiness, almonds, and alcohol. A bit hot as expected for a young Schloss Eggenberg beer. I look forward to trying this vintage again in about five years to see how it matures. jrob21 (1251), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jan 5, 2009 Pours a pretty delicious looking dark orange amber clear color. At first out of the fridge it reminds me more of an orange liquor. As it warms you get a little more toasted grain and malt. Aroma is sugary and slightly alcoholic. Finish is a little hot after you get some grassy kind of hops snuck in there.
