randolphjj (89), Raymore, Missouri, USA Feb 13, 2009 2007 batch. Has no head, but you know you have a serious beer in the glass. A bit viscous in the delivery, with good raisin, malt, and fruit notes. skortila (2875), Bunnik, Netherlands Feb 13, 2009 Bottled, 5 years old. Aroma has sweetish maltiness, dried fruits, bit winey. Red-brown coloured beer with a lasting, off-white head. The taste is quite sweet, malty, fruity (dried, raisin). Medium bodied. Nice. thejon375 (390), Tampa, Florida, USA Feb 13, 2009 Great beer with a neat story. Brewed once a year and crazy high alcohol. Good flavor and alcohol doesnt hit you in the face like some high abvs do. Good served slightly warmed about 60 degrees. Becomes more complex as it warms up. 00cobraR (1096), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Feb 8, 2009 2005 bottle. this beer was brutal. Pours out a clear dark brown with not head. aroma was fruity with a small amount of malt to it. Flavor was sweet with a very strong alcohol hit to it. Too much for me. Burned all the way down. as it warmed, this beer improved, but still too boozey tomer (365), Rishon Le Zion, Israel Feb 7, 2009 0.33L bottle, bottled in 2004, nearly no head, and what there is dissapears almost in an instance, hazy plum red colour, much like an aged sherry, aroma of barnyard, dried apricots and figs ,and touches of mushroom and tobacco. Sweet but not cloying, with a noticable alcoholic presence and notes od bitter dark chocolate, nuts, dates and caramel. very much like a sweet oloroso sherry or a barleywine but for the dominating presence of alcohol. Long and extremely sour aftertaste with a hint of pomegranate, syrupy mouth coating texture. A good serious beer which does not feel like your average dopplebock. FezMonkey (268), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Feb 5, 2009 Nice ruby color with practically no head. Very malty aroma with fruits. extremely sweet malt flavor with fruits. It has a nice warming feel from the alcohol but it is hidden well for as strong as it is. reminds me of a port. mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Feb 2, 2009 Pours a dark ruby-red with no head, and a very buttery, fruity aroma. Strong dark fruit taste is almost immediately overwhelmed by warm, nearly burning alcohol. Despite this, the finish is short-lived. The body is thick and coating and low in carbonation. Quite an impressive doppelbock, but the buttery tones are a bit distracting, and the high alcohol burns off a lot of complexity in the finish. gibson584 (25), Kentucky, USA Jan 25, 2009 draught at flannigan’s. Sample of 20cl in tulip glass. Poured with reasonable head. Aroma of apricot and scents similar to a smooth cognac. I found this easier to drink than the spaten optimater even though it was double the alcohol content. Good for a doppelbock but personally not one of my favorite styles.
