brewblackhole (1367), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Feb 1, 2008 Monster dark fruit aroma, being brought to my sniffer courtesy of a monster cloud of alcohol. Aroma was quite inticing, especially considering the brew was still alittle to cold. Taste is big raisiny plum flavors coupled with sweet malt, and of course the alcohol, not that wild considering its 14%. I liked this a lot, wish I could have sipped it slower Guinness4Duff (507), Tallahassee (and Poconos, PA), Florida, USA Feb 1, 2008 2006 Bottle. Pours a clear brown color with no head. Aroma is of molasses and alcohol. Very strong sweet flavor of caramel and molasses hides the alcohol well. I cant believe that this isnt rated higher, an extraordinary beer. Guerde (696), Welcome, Minnesota, USA Jan 31, 2008 (bottle) Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Not a very strong aroma, but what is there is a very sweet malt with alcohol that stings the nostrils. Taste was very sweet, mostly got plum, molasses, brown sugar, and a little bit of alcohol on the finish. Not too bad. Tiboron (13), Florida, USA Jan 27, 2008 12oz from fourwinds, pensacola....07 btl austrian with the heart of a abbey ale....overall a great beer...one btl buzz after4ever (2711), Brier, Washington, USA Jan 26, 2008 330. Brand new bottle. So this isn’t a "real" Samichlaus rating in the sense that it’s not a properly aged bottle. Pours crystal clear rubied medium amber with a thick and creamy tan head that falls quickly away to nothing. No head, no lace. Sweet, dense, syrupy nose--maple syrup, white sugar, brown sugar, molasses. Layers and layers of sweetness. Body’s surprisingly close to just a nice medium drinkability. Very little carb, if any. All the different sugars come back around for the mid-palate. Creamy and velvety body as it traverses the palate. Long sticky fruit sugary finish. Obviously it would be infinitely more interesting to try this beer with years and years of age on it. As it stands, fresh, it’s nothing too special, really--just a sweet and sticky high-abv doppelbock that hides very well its considerable payload of booze. Pastor (509), Maine, USA Jan 26, 2008 12 oz bottle poured into a Pilsner glass the color is some what a maroonish brown with a finger worth of head that goes to a ring of lace around the glass. (I should have used a tulip)
Smell’s like a Belgian strong ale tons of sweet sugar, malts and alcohol but the alcohol is not overly strong
Flavor is sweat malt lots of sugar some earthiness and a thin vanilla note. A slight warmth to this in the end
Medium to thick body on this one
A nice beer great sipper like I said I should have used a tulip would have made the experience more enjoyable. I will grab another one of these for next winter .This is definitely another must try beer
DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Jan 25, 2008 11.2 oz. bottle on 1/23/2008. Deep coppery amber pour with a spare off white head that settled rapidly. Strong caramel aroma with very noticeable alcohol and some hints of vanilla and dark fruit. Thick, viscous, with low carbonation and a rich stickiness. Quite sweet, but seems to go well with the other qualities. Bitterness is never a factor in this beer. Best for sipping, late in the evening, like a vintage port. Jaminjimmy (6), Clayton, Missouri, USA does not count Jan 25, 2008 Big and bold, almost like a jack n coke, I am a bit underwhelmed by the richness of the sweetness and viscosity.
