Commercial Description:
The once strongest beer in the world is back ! Brewed only once a year on December 6. Samichlaus is aged for 10 months before bottling. This beer is perhaps the rarest in the world. Samichlaus may be aged for many years to come. Older vintages become more complex with a creamy warming finish. Serve with hardy robust dishes and desserts, particulary with chocolates, or as an after dinner drink by itself. Brewed under the exclusive licence of Feldschlösschen-Hürlimann-Holding, Switzerland.

Pours deep copper with a minimal head. Aroma is very malty and alcoholic. Taste is very thick and sweet, very malty and strong. Finishes thick and cloying, which is the only problem I have with this.

Bottled 33cl. It pours a beautiful red brown beer with a small, slightly tanned head. the nose is syrupy with notes of soy sauce, apricot, malt, raisins, marshmallows, figs and onions. Slightly metallic and rather medicinal. The taste is too alcoholic and syrupy. Notes of fruits (strawberries, raisins, dates and figs), marshmallows, port, vanilla, licorice and caramel. A huge alcohol burn. Nuts and aniseed showing up. Medicinal. The finish is grassy, buttery with a hint of strawberry. Too alcoholic for me.

Bouteille 330 ml.

Monster dark fruit aroma, being brought to my sniffer courtesy of a monster cloud of alcohol. Aroma was quite inticing, especially considering the brew was still alittle to cold. Taste is big raisiny plum flavors coupled with sweet malt, and of course the alcohol, not that wild considering its 14%. I liked this a lot, wish I could have sipped it slower

2006 Bottle. Pours a clear brown color with no head. Aroma is of molasses and alcohol. Very strong sweet flavor of caramel and molasses hides the alcohol well. I cant believe that this isnt rated higher, an extraordinary beer.

(bottle) Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Not a very strong aroma, but what is there is a very sweet malt with alcohol that stings the nostrils. Taste was very sweet, mostly got plum, molasses, brown sugar, and a little bit of alcohol on the finish. Not too bad.

330. Brand new bottle. So this isn’t a "real" Samichlaus rating in the sense that it’s not a properly aged bottle.
Pours crystal clear rubied medium amber with a thick and creamy tan head that falls quickly away to nothing. No head, no lace. Sweet, dense, syrupy nose--maple syrup, white sugar, brown sugar, molasses. Layers and layers of sweetness. Body’s surprisingly close to just a nice medium drinkability. Very little carb, if any. All the different sugars come back around for the mid-palate. Creamy and velvety body as it traverses the palate. Long sticky fruit sugary finish.
Obviously it would be infinitely more interesting to try this beer with years and years of age on it. As it stands, fresh, it’s nothing too special, really--just a sweet and sticky high-abv doppelbock that hides very well its considerable payload of booze.
