KAF (441), Coralville, Iowa, USA Jan 25, 2008 Light rusty copper color with a small white head that dissipated quickly. Sweet aroma of candied fruit and dark fruits as well. Taste is also sweet. Caramel and candied apple and the alcohol is also noticable but not overpowering. lucke13 (90), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Jan 23, 2008 Updated: Feb 4, 20082006 bottle. Poured a transparent redish-brown without any noticeable haze. About a cm of fizzy head that quickly receeded leaving no lacing. The bubbles kept coming but did not maintain even the faintest head. Sweet apple smells remind me of autumn at the orchard. The alcohol is prominent on the tounge, and is accompanied by some candy-like flavors. The bubbles reappear when tasted and the mouthfeel is rather nice. A nice beer, but one to be sipped. Petrucci914 (574), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jan 20, 2008 (2006 Vintage). Pours a crisp golden color with some soapy bubbles. Aroma is caramel, toffee, green apples, and alcohol. Taste is sweet caramel, honey, and alcohol. All right for sipping. BelgianBeerGal (1275), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jan 19, 2008 2006 Bottle. Very nice copper colour with a white head that quickly dissolves. Slight aroma of caramel and of course alcohol. Flavour is slightly overpowered by the alcohol at first but mellows into notes of sweetness. Saved a couple bottles for aging and maybe higher scores. 17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 18, 2008 Updated: Sep 24, 2008[2006 Vintage] Dismal reddish/caramel pour with some large bubbles stuck to the side and ZERO head. Smells like a barleywine, sweet caramel malts with cinnamon apples, and alcohol. Damn I wish I aged this for another year or so. Wow, great flavors, very much like a port. Super sweet maltiness, reminds me of J.W. Dundees brews but much more drinkable. Palate is so perfect for this sticky style, not very carbonated (because it doesnt need to be) but light enough to be on the border between a drinker and sipper. There is noticeable alcohol notes however they taste more like 9% rather than 14. Very underrated brew... going to go stick one in my cellar for a half a decade. This beer must vary a lot from bottle to bottle....mine was spectacular.
[2006 Vintage re-rate 09/24/08] Pours a sticky dirty orange with larger bubbles and a very thin white head. Sweet rich fermented barleywine aroma, lots of hay, rich caramel, and cinnamon. Sweet and spicy! Rich caramel and cinnamon. Finishes with lots of amazing port flavors. Honey like stickiness in the body, however its light enough to drink. So rich.
FrostBlast (2), Quebec, Canada does not count Jan 16, 2008 2006 Vintage. Very appealing copper body. Small white head. Aroma has some barley and honey and a fair bit of alcohol, but also a little something that can put you off, which is why I didn’t rate it higher. Palate is very soft, velvelty, flows nicely and feels very full. Flavour would be comparable to a beer version of mead (honey wine), very sweet but still very enjoyable. Egon (392), Gothenburg, Sweden Jan 14, 2008 Bottle. Dark copper with small white head. Dense, alcoholic aroma Sweet. Honey. Some malt. Not bad but maybe too strong. kappldav123 (1790), Markkleeberg, Germany Jan 13, 2008 The bottle looks really good. Dark color, nearly copper-like. Very alcoholic aroma. Flavor very strong and prickly. A very good beer, but not a beer for every day!
