Commercial Description:
The once strongest beer in the world is back ! Brewed only once a year on December 6. Samichlaus is aged for 10 months before bottling. This beer is perhaps the rarest in the world. Samichlaus may be aged for many years to come. Older vintages become more complex with a creamy warming finish. Serve with hardy robust dishes and desserts, particulary with chocolates, or as an after dinner drink by itself. Brewed under the exclusive licence of Feldschlösschen-Hürlimann-Holding, Switzerland.

I tried this beer on September 25, 2007 at ’Smokeless Joe’s’ in Toronto. The beer poured a reddish copper colour with a thin white head. The aroma was very sugary, almost maple. The mouthfeel was thick, creamy, and very little hint of carbonation. The taste was very sweet, almost cognacy, with a hint of bitterness.

Bottle. Looks like a 2006 version. Pours a ruby mixed with amber color, very little head. Aroma is sweet with notes of fruit and malt. Body is kind of oily and has medium to light carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, and of fruit, apricot, figs. It has a fairly sweet finish with sweet malts and hints of alcohol. Man, this is strong with alcohol but it remains hidden besides the warmth. Flavorful, a little sweet, decently balanced, this is one gnarly beer. I’ll try to get another and age it a while.

2006. Bottle. Pours a deep amber with ruby edging and hardly any head. Aroma is very fuity with cherries dominating. Port like, vinous and full bodied. A heavy caramel malt or toffee flavor with subdued esters in the background. Complex and very smooth, deceptively smooth. Slightly warming but alcohol is well hidden. Excellent.

Bottle. Light bronze color. Little head. Faint but pleasing aroma. Strong flavor... a little overly sweet, but with a nice finish.

Light in color for a doppel, and the aroma came off as a bit weak, but this thing has enough flavor to make it up. Thick honey, some floral flavors, and a warming feeling of alcohol without a big alcohol flavor. Would be better on a colder night, I think.

330 ml bottle. Lovely amber color, small beige head. It´s very sweet and very fruity. Smells almost like gasoline... Alcohol is well hidden. This beer makes me happy.
