Commercial Description:
The once strongest beer in the world is back ! Brewed only once a year on December 6. Samichlaus is aged for 10 months before bottling. This beer is perhaps the rarest in the world. Samichlaus may be aged for many years to come. Older vintages become more complex with a creamy warming finish. Serve with hardy robust dishes and desserts, particulary with chocolates, or as an after dinner drink by itself. Brewed under the exclusive licence of Feldschlösschen-Hürlimann-Holding, Switzerland.

2006 Bottle: Pours a golden yellow with a big fluffy white head. Aroma of weet fruits and alcohol. Flavor is sweet malts and apricot and tangerine fruity esters with a lot of alcohol warming. Body is fairly light considering alcohol. Probably would make a good afterdinner drink but cant see drinking this often.

12oz bottle poured in a Sam Adams special glass. Whew! Not for the faint of heart. The fruit and sweet cloyingness were saved, somewhat, by the alcohol. I won’t be rushing out for this again. It was unique except for that typical "gotta hide the fuel" taste.

The aroma was malty and nutty with a strong caramel presence and a toasty note. The aroma contained raisins and prunes and deep malt notes of sherry with a very lightly spicy hop note still remaining deep in the background. The beer poured into the glass crystal clear deep amber with a fleeting white head which was gone before one could note it’s presence. The head did remain long enough to leave tracing at the edges of the surface. The flavor was malty, deeply so, with raisins and prunes (light on the prunes) with dark caramel and a slight bit of chocolate. The flavor was nutty, toasty and bready, oh heck, it was complex as heck. The flavor contained alcohol and a bit of spicy hops for good measure. The finish was heading toward dry, but not quite there yet with lasting malt characteristics long and strong into the aftertaste. The body was full and almost viscous with a rather low carbonation level. The warming of alcohol after consumption lets one know in an instant that this is a force to be reckoned with. A great brew with lasting impressions of malt, if it is this good at 4 years, I cannot wait until 10! 12 ounce bottle. 2003 vintage.

Wow, what a strange and memorable beer. In the glass, both the aroma and appearance do nothing to set-up the flavor in store. In the mouth, the flavor is completely overwhelming: reminding me a boilermaker (beer with a shot of whiskey) or something harder. The finish was TOTALLY over-the-top alcoholic with no other flavors present, as far a I could tell, except the booze. In fact, the only reason I was able to finish this beer was because I was eating dinner and had food to clean the palette. In the commerical description, when they say ’serve with hardy robust dishes’ they are not kidding, this beer would be next to impossible to finish with out food. It is worth trying simply because it is so unique, but unless you like extremely alcoholic drinks you will be disappointed. Oh ya, also don’t believe the hype that this is a rare beer: I bought my bottle at a HUGE grocery store in France. I am sure, anyone who wanted a bottle could find it with out much difficulty.

[256-20070408] 330mL (c/o tuqueboy, w/ jerc, 2006 Vintage). Booooozy sweet caramel aroma. Clear, brown red body with a big bubbly two-second light tan head. Boozy caramel toast presence in flavour. Full body. Very alcoholic but nice and sweet like sherry.

This was awful. The carbonation was almost non-existent, and the aroma, like the taste was cloyingly sweet. No hop prescence at all, just overwhelming maltiness. Also really hot and a bit of an astringent taste.

Pours burnt orange with a head that quickly disappears into the snifter. The carbonation stays lively throughout. Really strong sweet bread aroma. Very heavy syrupy body. Alcohol warming like a good bourbon. Plenty of malt complexity of sweet varieties. A long slow sipper.
