The once strongest beer in the world is back ! Brewed only once a year on December 6. Samichlaus is aged for 10 months before bottling. This beer is perhaps the rarest in the world. Samichlaus may be aged for many years to come. Older vintages become more complex with a creamy warming finish. Serve with hardy robust dishes and desserts, particulary with chocolates, or as an after dinner drink by itself. Brewed under the exclusive licence of Feldschlösschen-Hürlimann-Holding, Switzerland.

Soooo sweet... and strong! It has to be an after dinner drink, with cheese and chocolate.

This is pretty intense drinking. Lots of immediate sweet things, full thick mouthfeel and you get a sense that it’s alcohol heavy. Colour is lovely needs more carbonation. Might take a while to get to the bottom of this as it’s full on.

330 ml bottle bought at Fürstenberg in Tsuen Wan.

Looks: Clear dark amber brown colour; Very thin head and residual soapy light beige foam which fades in 10 seconds; Moderate sticky lacing and notable slight carbonation.

Aroma: Very strong sweet dark malt, with strong caramel which can be smelt as soon as it was popped, plus strong plum, strong raisins, Cognac, sugar, light butterscotch and floral nectar.

Taste: Very strong sweet dark malt, with roastiness, nuts, strong sweet caramel, toffee, Cognac, very light chocolate, strong apricot, dark fruits, very nice sugar syrup, warm alcohol, nutmegs, faint lemon, light bitter hops and very light grass.

Body: Full body. Oily palate.

Mouth Feel: It really feels like a refined version of Dubuisson’s Bush de Noël: strong dark malt with good roasty and nutty feel. Oily body. The sugar syrup is lesser burden than Samichlaus Helles, and actually less sweeter (they are both at 14% abv, so this is a plus!); Full flavour of liqour-like apricots and dark fruits soaked in light Cognac, topped with nutmegs and spices. This is some sophisticated stuff!

Alcohol: The booze is even more refined than that of Samichlaus Helles. It get warmer, but very gradually. Whereas the Helles give you an instant winter warmer vibes and, you don’t feel the 14% booze most of the time, a tell-tale sign of a great brew!

Hoppiness: No aroma; faint lemon and thin grass in taste. Bittterness is notable, light but strong , enough to give the syrup a run for the money for a astringent spike in the middle palate (i.e, sweet -> bitter -> sweet), ended in strong sweet-bitter spikes finish.

After Taste: Wet. Nice sweet and Cognac-like to mouth.

Comments: This is one top beer, period. It bear quite a lot of similiaries with Bush de Noël, but it surpasses the latter with humanities - good roastyness, gradually warm booze, sweet but not so sweet malt syrups, loaded liquor-ish apricots and dark fruits. Could the choice of roast dark malt makes it a far better taster than Samichlau Helles? Maybe, but one thing’s for sure: for experienced beer tasters, this is a real treasure to savour and for the casual drinkers, this is a lady-killer. Salute!

UPDATED: JUN 22, 2014 0.33l bottle. Pours a deep red with virtually no head. Really complex and rich aromas. Cough syrup, pleasant burnt sugar, butterscotch, vanilla, alcohol. Immediately sweet with cherry and raisin flavors, these give way to a really nice, rich toffee flavor in the middle which lingers for a long time. Middle also has some vanilla Just enough hop bitter to balance out the sweetness, leaving a warm, alcohol flavor in the chest (and the head). Full body with a thick mouth feel, and cloying sugars. Overall, really complex and sweet beer. Couldn’t drink too many of these, but as a desert beer, sehr lecker. As far as doppelbocks go, this is one of the best I’ve had.

Bottle from beer junction. No head on this pour. Very reddish appearance. On first sip a molasses and vanilla oak taste. Some slight sour notes. Pretty good beer . Hard to nail the style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Deep brownish copper with a quickly fading head. Deep raisin, fig, and plum flavors with a malty undertone. The alcohol content is there for sure, but not biting or harsh. Long, smooth finish.
