3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
11.2 oz. bottle from Wilbur’s. Appearance: slight white head, no lasting head, clear, ruby red, no lacing. Aroma: caramel, alcohol, light fruitiness, thin body, soft to no carbonation, alcohol thinness, medium full body. Taste: sweet caramel and prune fruitiness, finishing with alcohol covering up the sweetness a bit and alcohol wears out after a bit. Overall, very interesting, alcohol balances well, the sweetness is well done, nothing is super amazing, but it overall is really well done.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle thanks to Coworker: Poured a dark amber with a thin off white head. Sticky sweet malts are present in the nose. Hit in the face with strong alcohol, sweet malts and highly fermented fruits. Wow my mouth is tingling.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from the COOP, paid about $6... Surprised to see it on the floor, there can’t be that many people picking it up. Poured into my FW goblet, tannish head rises up and dies back very quickly.. the brew is deeeeep walnut, still clear but it is daaarrrk.
The nose smells like, "go to your cupboard and grab the box of raisins... stuff your nose in it and breathe deeply." Not getting much anything that would put this into the "blackbier" category.. tons of melanoidin malt..
Thick and rich maltiness... deep caramel but never gets absurdly sweet.. No cloying sugary notes, just sweet maltiness... You must make the difference with this one.. Deep malty is very different than sweet.. Very rich and still forgiving.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: APR 5, 2015 When I first heard about this beer, back in the nineties, it was still brewed in Switzerland and was probably the strongest lager in the world, as well as one of the strongest beers in Europe. I never managed to find it, it was discontinued then, but is now fortunately revived by an Austrian brewery and in this current form, I eventually saw an opportunity to buy it online, as a 2013 vintage. Very curious about this. Cristal clear, beautiful deep copper colour, very little fizz, thin, loose, off-white head, quickly breaking under influence of the alcohol, leaving little more than a steady rim around the glass after several minutes and disappearing altogether in the end. Enticing, complex, sweetly perfumed bouquet of brown rhum, home made caramel, chocolate liqueur, raisins, cloves, sour cream, plum brandy, cider, tea, marzipan or amaretto, vanilla, some earthy hops and the expected oxidation setting in, but in a noble, port wine kind of way. Taste kicks off with a sugary but noble and refined, vanilla- and candi sugar-like sweetness, some candied fruits and raisins, with the expected soft carbonation (almost flat, actually) and smooth, velvety and very vinous mouthfeel; caramelly and chocolatey maltiness, refined and noble again, lean and sweet, seamlessly merging into a very warming, but not at all astringent, alcoholic finish of fine brandy, chocolate liqueur and rhum, through which the sugar and malt sweetness keep lingering, assisted by a subtle but balancing, earthy hop presence rendering more background structure than actual bitterness; warming alcohol and lingering sweetness, perhaps a bit (too?) cloying, remain. This is, in all, exciting and satisfying: a bittersweet symphony of pure and ’clean’ maltiness, candied sweetness and a clear presence of alcohol (not surprising considering the impressive ABV) which is cleverly kept under control and serves as a throat- and heart-warming factor without becoming obnoxious or wry. Especially with the head gone, it felt more like sampling a port or madera wine than a ’true’ beer; this is the bottom-fermented equivalent of a barley wine. I love this, this is among the best Doppelbocks (or even lagers in general) I had so far and certainly the best Austrian beer for me. Glad I finally had the chance to taste it and I’ll remember this for a long time...

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, 33cl. Clear ruby with a frothy tan head, Musky aroma of dried fruits, roasted malts and alcohol. Medium bodied with moderate to flat carbonation. Intensely sweet, with a subtle but well matched bitterness. Complex and very well brewed, with a tremendous sweet roasted character and a heavy bitter and alcohol finish. Unexpectedly drinkable compared to other Samichalus. Like an oporto or a lager-barleywine, very pleasant.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aged a couple of years. Smells great, lots of sweet malt, funky soy sauce aroma. Completely clear dark mahogany color, minimum head. Tastes super syrupy sweet, upfront tons of red fruit, finishes with soy sauce and tons of candi sugar. Not overly complex and kind of syrupy, but decent. Syrupy bodied and average carbonation. OK.

Bottle 330ml, 2014 edition. Slightly hazy amber with no head. Strong aroma of prune, some cherry notes, spicy and syrupy. Very sweet flavor, notes of prune and carob, chocolate with liqueur, some spiciness, very boozy. Light carbonation, medium to full-bodied. Not easy to drink.
