Samichlaus is brewed once a year on December 6, and is aged for 10 months before bottling. It is one of the rarest specialties in the world. Samichlaus may be aged in the bottle for many years to come, as older vintages become more complex. Brilliant deep amber, complex dry toasted malt nose and huge intensely sweet palate. The 2007 bottling is the first bottling since 1987. 32°

"2007 bottle...it’s been so long since I had the black label, i have a hard time telling the difference. this too is overly sweet and a bit of a one trick pony, but maybe because the age is not quite as thick and harsh as the black was. still a little too sweet and thick, but it’s a decent after dinner sipper."

Poured from bottle to glass. Copper hue with fizzy off white head that dissipated quickly. Aroma is malt, figs, brown sugar, ethanol, banana. Mouthfeel is ok with a full body and soft carbonation. Taste is sweet throughout with an ethanol finish. Overall this beer is ok but is a bit slick on the tongue.

330 ml bottle bought at Fürstenberg in Tsuen Wan.

Looks: Clear amber honeycolour; Razor-thin head and residual soapy white foam which fades in 10 seconds; Minimal sticky lacing and notable slight carbonation.

Aroma: Very strong sweet malt, with strong brandy, strong plum, butterscotch, sugar syrup, raisins and floral nectar.

Taste: Very strong sweet malt, with strong caramel, toffee, brandy, strong apricot, nice sugar syrup, warm alcohol, faint lemon, very light bitter hops and very light grass.

Body: Mid to full body. Oily palate.

Mouth Feel: Nice sugar bomb! Full maltyness but not that rich, strong but not too intense Brandy followed by apricots, strong caramel and toffee. Sugar syrup is not too thick sweetness in a nice, dark fruity way. Yeah!

Alcohol: Instant warm booze, never screaming and can’t be felt throughout. This 14% abv is well presented, but should be appreciated with care!

Hoppiness: Faint grass nose, very light lemon and thin grass in taste. Bittterness is very light but notable, just enough to complement the syrup sweetness for a strong sweet- low bitter semi finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry. Warm and liquor-like to mouth.

Comments: The “Samichlaus” is altogether a different level of strong beer - very good sweet liquor aroma woth nice floral and dark fruits, very nice syrups with apricots and brandy, 14% booze is comfy and superbly-managed, plus neat light hoppiness to top it off. After having so many watery and average beers from this brewery, the Samichlaus really means business, and this Helles serves as an excellent introduction to its brand of sweet-booze madness, control-freak style. Highly recommended!

A lighter (?) version of their classic, with an amber body but all the kick of the sweet malt. ABV not really noticeable. Creamy head, nice lacing. Sweet malt aroma and taste., also on the finish. Alcohol sneaks up on you at the end.

Cerveza fuerte en sabor y porcentaje de alcohol. Tiene regustos dulces que recuerdan a miel. Recomendable para tomarla tranquilamente

Pours a thin layer, white head that fades quickly leaving no lace. Crystal clear amber color. Very light carbonation and medium bodied. Nose is sugar and hints of alcohol, flavor is smooth and sweet, dark fruit, almost cloying. Similar to their classic. NOT a session beer - the 14% ABV is noticeable . . . savor this beer. $5.99 for a 330ml bottle, from Julio’s Liquors Westborough, MA. Bottled in 2012.

BOTTLE 33CL. Look: clear amber, small white head with poor retention. Aroma: some malt, but mostly sugary sweetness. Taste: Extremely sweet, but somewhat simplistic, thick body.

Unlike the regular Samichlaus, the Helles is more like strong euro-lager.
