Samichlaus is brewed once a year on December 6, and is aged for 10 months before bottling. It is one of the rarest specialties in the world. Samichlaus may be aged in the bottle for many years to come, as older vintages become more complex. Brilliant deep amber, complex dry toasted malt nose and huge intensely sweet palate. The 2007 bottling is the first bottling since 1987. 32°

330 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled in 2012. Pours fairly crystal clear golden orange color with a 1 finger fairly dense off white head with solid retention, that reduces to a ring of lace. Minimal lacing on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, honey, brown sugar, golden raisin, plum, fig, cherry, apple, lightly toasted bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast ester, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste big of caramel, honey, brown sugar, golden raisin, plum, fig, cherry, apple, lightly toasted bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Slight earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, honey, brown sugar, golden raisin, plum, fig, cherry, apple, lightly toasted bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast ester, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a smooth and fairly slick/syrupy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small-moderate warming after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Helles doppelbock style. All around great complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast ester, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on slowly for the huge ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

2010 bottle that I lugged back from Arizona a few years ago. Copper pour with a little bit of white head, not much to look at. Aroma is wood, cardboard, dark fruits, corn syrup, lots of sticky sweetness, but interesting. Taste is sweet sugar, candied fruit, followed by some light booze, finish is sweet and boozy. Well it’s interesting for sure, lots of booze on this and bottle is around 4 years old, the taste it a bit cloying at first but as after a few sips the sweetness isn’t as noticeable, cool tasting brew very sweet though.

"2007 bottle...it’s been so long since I had the black label, i have a hard time telling the difference. this too is overly sweet and a bit of a one trick pony, but maybe because the age is not quite as thick and harsh as the black was. still a little too sweet and thick, but it’s a decent after dinner sipper."

Poured from bottle to glass. Copper hue with fizzy off white head that dissipated quickly. Aroma is malt, figs, brown sugar, ethanol, banana. Mouthfeel is ok with a full body and soft carbonation. Taste is sweet throughout with an ethanol finish. Overall this beer is ok but is a bit slick on the tongue.

330 ml bottle bought at Fürstenberg in Tsuen Wan.

Looks: Clear amber honeycolour; Razor-thin head and residual soapy white foam which fades in 10 seconds; Minimal sticky lacing and notable slight carbonation.

Aroma: Very strong sweet malt, with strong brandy, strong plum, butterscotch, sugar syrup, raisins and floral nectar.

Taste: Very strong sweet malt, with strong caramel, toffee, brandy, strong apricot, nice sugar syrup, warm alcohol, faint lemon, very light bitter hops and very light grass.

Body: Mid to full body. Oily palate.

Mouth Feel: Nice sugar bomb! Full maltyness but not that rich, strong but not too intense Brandy followed by apricots, strong caramel and toffee. Sugar syrup is not too thick sweetness in a nice, dark fruity way. Yeah!

Alcohol: Instant warm booze, never screaming and can’t be felt throughout. This 14% abv is well presented, but should be appreciated with care!

Hoppiness: Faint grass nose, very light lemon and thin grass in taste. Bittterness is very light but notable, just enough to complement the syrup sweetness for a strong sweet- low bitter semi finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry. Warm and liquor-like to mouth.

Comments: The “Samichlaus” is altogether a different level of strong beer - very good sweet liquor aroma woth nice floral and dark fruits, very nice syrups with apricots and brandy, 14% booze is comfy and superbly-managed, plus neat light hoppiness to top it off. After having so many watery and average beers from this brewery, the Samichlaus really means business, and this Helles serves as an excellent introduction to its brand of sweet-booze madness, control-freak style. Highly recommended!

A lighter (?) version of their classic, with an amber body but all the kick of the sweet malt. ABV not really noticeable. Creamy head, nice lacing. Sweet malt aroma and taste., also on the finish. Alcohol sneaks up on you at the end.

Very bright amber color with almost no head. Aroma hints at flavor. Very sweet and smooth. Even my wife said "Wow!"
