TheCaptain (526), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 16, 2008 Bottle shared with the Knights after German club beer Fest, nice night! Poured a liquor like caramel amber, rich and cream like with small foam head. Light sweet aroma of dark roast fruits. Smooth and mellow on the pallet nice rich mix. Really liked this Doppelbock and calling it the Cognac of beers is a pretty good description. afireinside96 (817), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 14, 2008 Updated: Dec 23, 2008Bottle shared with the Devonshire boys. Pours an orange-amber with some fluffy head. A beer of this gravity with a head is quite a feat. Smells sweet and caramely. Tastes sweet and smooth with a caramel touch. Slightly boozy finish. daniele (1644), Italy Jun 10, 2008 oro poca schiuma non persistente sentori intensi leggero ossidato frutta malto alcol legno in bocca ben bilanciata leggermente tendente al dolce buon corpo l’alcol si sente fa non infastidisce non eccezionale ma da provare Crafty07 (391), Florence, Kentucky, USA Jun 6, 2008 I agree with last two reviewers, the ratebeer folks (and MJ in his 500 classic beer guide) have misidentified as a dopplebock when the class ’Imperial Lager’ is much better suited.
This exceedingly strong ’cognac of beers’ is well made, I’m quite sure.
I simply don’t have the palate nor the desire to consume cognac nor this strong concoction. dalepryor (172), Paducah, Kentucky, USA May 23, 2008 pours golden, it really smells like sapporo to me, and looks similar, this is supposed to be a doppelbock right? hmm more like an imperial lager i would say. not bad but not at all what i was expecting nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA May 14, 2008 0.33 l. Orange-gold with a small head that mostly fizzes away. Earthy-spiced toffee and slight sweet corn and apple in the aroma. Flavors of toffee, grain, port, slight banana, bitterish nut, earthy herbs and dried wood. Medium body is smooth with a nice alcohol tongue tingle, and a chest-warming finish. mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada May 8, 2008 Pours a clear gold with a thin layer of foam and lots of bubbles, minimal lacing. Aroma is very lagery, stale skunky hops. Taste, well things are looking up; this is sort of like an imperial lager more than any doppelbock I’ve ever tasted. Wow. Very much like any lager you’ve had at first, but then you realize it’s super strong, thick, and full of alcohol. I definitely taste raw figs, apricot, spicy towards the finish - I can see how the "cognac" description fits at this point. Warms nicely at the finish, coats the throat, nice and chewy and reasonable carb. I do like this beer, but not within the context of a doppelbock. How about European Strong Lager? sstackho (249), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 2, 2008 330mL bottle purchased from LCBO in Toronto. Pours a poor fizzy pale gold. Little head and no lacing. Decent malty aroma. First taste is sweet. Very sweet. The taste remains syrupy throughout. The malts don’t balance out the sweetness and the hops are not noticeable. Not an enjoyable beer.
