Diogène (544), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Mar 16, 2008 Clear golden with a thin white head. Aroma is malt, spices, cloves and ginger. Flavor us sweet malt, corn, spices, orange zest, vanilla and a hint of ice cider. Medium body with low carbonation. esjaygee (1467), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Mar 16, 2008 At Three cellars tasting. A bit too sticky and sweet, maybe I don’t like Doppelbocks as much as I thought I did. This one left a bitter finish and it just felt all wrong. french tickler (642), Aylmer, Quebec, Canada Mar 15, 2008 Clear golden poor with a very thin almost non-existant head. Aromas of corn, corn syrup, cranberries, toffee and ginger. Missing a little complexity for a 9% brew... Lack of bitterness, sweeter presence. Creamy body with nice effervescence. Flavors of lime and beer, corn and acohol fumes. Far from the cognac of beers but definitely worth trying. DerWeg (750), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 13, 2008 Surprisingly light and clear but that is just my ’bock’ preconception. Reserved hop presence allows silky toffee malts to predominate. Very warming alcoholic strength but (at cellar temp, not even chilled) the alcohol was well integrated into the malty body - it was never "burning hot". Overall reminds me variously of disparate beers - Mill Street 2005 Barley Wine, HOTD ADAM, and Tripels such as Chimay.
All said, very good & unusual strong lager, quite drinkable and I really enjoy it. I refuse to believe it would expire on the half-year life span indicated. It would cellar much longer and is a very nice value IMO.
** oh and I’d like to add this is probably very much a beer for the Austrian’s taste, and as such is very true to itself and its lager-yeast providence. A thing that is what it is deserves individual respect rather than just a lot of searching comparisons. IMO. MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Mar 10, 2008 331ml bottle from LCBO- Decants sparkling gold/with lime green accents and pours a fizzy white head. The nose is heavy on the grains, and is accompanied by lemon peel, some licorice, and some dank, wet hay. This beer shows flavours of sweet grain, lemon zest, vanilla pudding, sweet, zesty malts, with good spice. FInishes a bit too sweet for my taste (reminds me of pineau de charentes), with a pineapple fruit zing. It’s good, but only in small doses. nimbleprop (822), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA Mar 10, 2008 On tap at The Saloon on U Street in Washington D.C. Served very very cold in a small glass (maybe 7oz). The Saloon offers this beer on draft but only allows one per customer. Interesting. Transparent orange, amber color with a sticky, foamy white head. Smells of heavy sugar and malt with a distinct alcohol aroma. Flavor is very similar with tons of malt, sugar and alcohol right at the forefront. Flavor is dominated by sticky fruits, vanilla and oak. Finish has plenty of heat from the alcohol and a residual sweetness. This beer is definitely a one trick pony with all the malt and sweetness. It also won’t please the doppelbock fans because it doesn’t look or tasted like a traditional doppel. wilderthanyou (411), Guelph, Ontario, Canada Mar 9, 2008 Reminds me of Dogfish’s Midas Touch a little. Pours a honey yellow with no head. The aroma is sweet, caramel, honey, muscat, and alcohol. The flavour is, like the aroma, sweet, with honey being the first and strongest throughout the beer, some caramel and muscat wine like notes in the middle, and more caramel in the finish. A sticky, syrupy mouthfeel, with good carbonation. A decent brew, a little sweet for my taste, but good. robinvboyer (1419), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada Mar 8, 2008 pour a deep golden color. Doppelbock eh? pretty light colored..........not what i was expecting. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, and i’m getting a touch of sweet apples. Flavour is BOOZE. wow.
Some sweet malt comes through after the booze punch. Wow, this is interesting. After you get anihilated by the booze, the flavour developes, and you get some sweet malt, a touch of hops, and a little bit of fruit, like apple, and plum. NOt a bad beer, but i wouldn’t say this is a dopelbock.......maybe more a euro strong lager?
