TheBeerBaron (218), Florida, USA Apr 14, 2009 Golden red hue, translucent with a fading white head. A typical amount of carbonation but less that other high gravity ales. A very fruity aroma giving impression of pears and grapes then more wheat than any hops you usually expect in this type. The taste is brandy like with a a puckering sweetness and high alcohol concentration, this is expected from 9.6% alcohol, one of the highest I have tried. Not surprisingly the palate is gooey. All in all its preferable to some other super strengih german bocks on the blocks. SudsMcDuff (1691), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA Apr 13, 2009 Books are useless! I only ever read one book, “To Kill A Mockingbird,” and it gave me absolutely no insight on how to kill mockingbirds! Sure it taught me not to judge a man by the color of his skin…but what good does *that* do me? shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Apr 6, 2009 Unknown Vintage (At least several years old though...)
4/06/2009: My personal opinion is that Austrian beers just don’t get the love or respect that they deserve. I know that they aren’t overly fantastic, but they are generally solid, flavorful, and true-to-style beers. Schloss Eggenberg Urbock 23° fits this description nicely. I was not disappointed and it delivered well on everything I was expecting from it. The slightly sweet caramel maltiness is delivered in the flavor along with sweet dates, cherry, hints of nuts, dry oak, golden raisins, light tobacco, and a good amount of smooth, warming alcohol similar in flavor to brandy toward the finish. There is even a suggestion of aged, dried apricot and spicy hops with just a whisp of bitterness. This beer isn’t too heavy, nor is it too light. I think it is just right for a doppelbock and slides down effortlessly. Even the deep golden/light coppery color is attractive. I am very satisfied with this beer.
11,2 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 9,6% vol.) found at West Side Liquor and Wines in West Harrison, Indiana. Rating #490 for this beer.
AM123 (1), Toronto, Ontario, Canada does not count Apr 5, 2009 Great looking beer, not much aroma, and the alcohol overpowers the palate a bit too much. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Apr 4, 2009 Pours a crystal clear light light gold with just a few odd bubbles for a head. The nose is sweet with malt. Clean. A little bready, with alcohol. Perhaps a touch of strawberry and champagne. Some very slight peppery hops. Medium to fuller body with small fizzy bubbles, but not a lot of carbonation. Alcoholic beast. Malty, some bread. Peppery hops appear a bit. Very clean. The sweetness dries up in a hurry. A fair amount of lingering heat. Perhaps suggestive of stone fruit. Cognac of beers? I’m not so sure... queensbeer (2), Valladolid, Spain does not count Mar 31, 2009 33 cl from Carlota’s shop in Valladolid. A lot of malt, sweet and impressive colour...9,6% is nice for me. pours weak. very clear with a minimal head, aromas of brown sugar. surprising smooth for a 9.6% cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 13, 2009 Looks like a pale american lager. Taste reminds me of cheaper strong american lagers. Rather coarse and rude on the palate. Overthe top in alky content, probably should be styled as a strong lager. Not much bockness in this brew except for the alky. Overall; in your face. Medicinal finish and a little dizzying. Strong as cognac, fer sure.
