Nose is similar to whisky. Has a whiskyish taste as well, with toffee flavors, and some fruitiness. A really good dose of hops--Saaz?--round things out perfectly. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 26, 2007 Updated: Oct 16, 2007A prime example of how over the course of many years your tastes can change considerably. Hated this the first round of times I tried it. Today, perhaps, my palate has arrived. Medium clear gold, slight head. Aroma was sweet honey malts, a touch of molasses, bread, fruits, yeast, and alcohol. Flavor matched, with honey sweet malt giving way to a lightly floral hop bitter finish. Sophisticated and complex, this was great. NOTE: sampled again on 10/14/07 as part of a BJCP training session. I couldn’t remember if I had liked this previously or not when I re-rated it, but my notes were virtually identical, except I did not note any fruitiness this time and did detect some booziness. I’ll leave up my initial rating, the rating from today would have been only a couple of points lower though. Final comment from today’s notes was "actually quite good." I need to remember that I enjoy this beer now.

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 22, 2008 Dont know why it took me so long to review this one, Ive been picking away at a case of it I cellared some time ago and it gets better with a year or so of age on it.
Pours a luxurious dark honey gold with a massive sticky white frothy cap.
Aroma is sweet honey some wood and licorice fusel tone almost like a sweet brandy.
Rich thick body produces a massive chew on toffee malts in the front, some smoky oak, apple. Then it seems to thin a bit as the finish reveals the alcohol in a licorice tang.
Slightly complex, big full bodied , long-lagered beer that any beer drinker has to appreciate. haf (333), Gijon, Spain

Aroma is dominated by ... cloudberry jam! Nice beginning as this jam is one of a very few memorable foods from Scandinavia. Brandy notes are quite distinct too. The flavor is rich, mostly of candied orange peel but also some chocolate. Thick and sticky in the mouth, persistent bitter-sweet aftertaste, well balanced. Worth trying. astrofrk (219), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 19, 2009 Golden, like a dark Pilsner. Sweet malty aroma of caramel and fruits. Flavor: Caramel, mango, chewy. Sweet finish with some alcahol burn.
This is a seriously underrated beer in my opinion. It has the kick of a Barleywine but keeps the personality of a true German Dopplebock. One cannot be much happier while getting one’s ass kicked! I will come back for this one. TheCaptain (559), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA

Poured a liquor like caramel amber, rich and cream like with small foam head. Light sweet aroma of dark roast fruits. Smooth and mellow on the pallet nice rich mix. Really liked this Doppelbock and calling it the Cognac of beers is a pretty good description.
