porterhouse (991), Alna, Maine, USA Jan 1, 2007 (11.2 oz bottle from Wells Discount Liquors) Excellent...Pours darkish tea brown with 1/2" of light tan head. Aroma is excellent - malty, raisiny, sugary sweetness. Mouthfeel smooth, full, very lightly sticky in finish. Thin rings of lacing. Flavor is just big malty brown sugar and raisins with that German sort of light smoky malt note through finish. Yummy. Classic.
Ungstrup (11692), Frederiksberg, Denmark Aug 30, 2008 Bottled. A dark amber beer with a fast disappearing brown head. The aroma is very sweet malty with strong notes of caramel. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of both alcohol, caramel, and pumpernickle bread. Borresteijn (672), Amstelveen, Netherlands Aug 19, 2008 On tap @ in de Wildeman, last winter. Reddish brown, off-white head. Aroma of sweet roasted malts, caramel, some dark fruits and alcohol. Flavour is very sweet, malty, caramel, dark fruits, slight alcohol bitterness. Way too sweet for me. alexsdad06 (688), Ohio, USA Aug 1, 2008 Bottled. POurs a clear dark brown with garnet highlights and a small fizzy off white head. The aroma, behind dark fruits and caramel malt exhibited quite a bit of sweetness. There is also alcohol and cookie dough present in the nose. The flavor mimcs the nose almost exactly: dark fruits, caramel malt, dough, and more alcohol than the nose indicated. There is also the addition of some hoppiness in the finish. Body is on the strong side of medium. Has a little viscous feel. This turned out to be a sweet surprise for a random single I picked up. Beerlando (1458), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 27, 2008 Bottle, maybe 2 years old. The cola brown body is tinted with a crimson hue and crowned by a small, frothy, off-white head. Minimal, spotty lacing. The aroma is very sweet and dessert-like, with notes of candy sugar, caramel, and dried figs and cherries. Some doughy yeast lends a softness, while lightly spicy, floral hops lend just a touch of bitterness. Flavors are again quite sweet and sugary up front, the candy sugar and dark, concentrated fruits serving their purpose. The earthy, peppery, floral hops come through in the end, combined with some alcoholic heat, to lend just the right amount of balancing edge. Medium-full bodied, moderately carbonated, and slightly syrupy, the body is textbook eisbock. Really, so is the whole package. Very good beer. jjpm74 (3448), Connecticut, USA Jul 22, 2008 Pours brown with a ruby red hue and a thin sparse ring of off white bubbles. Smells boozy with some sweetness underneath. Tastes of dark fruit, some cherries, sugar, some bananas, lots of spice. Very enjoyable.
