Clear brown colour, with a white head that leaves some lacing. Nutty aroma, malty taste, some bitterness coming late in the finish. My first Alt - nothing spectacular but nice and drinkable.

Where: Brewers Droop, Bristol How: Bottle (German Import) 500ml [BBE: 03/15] Blood Alc: 16mg/100ml First impression of the aroma is one of baked beans, I often get this with many continental beer styles. On top of this, there’s notes of very subtle chocolate, some lightly toasted caramel and.. well, that’s about it I suppose. It has a ’soft’ smell somehow. Head is good - white with lasting retention and stays at the right level. Flavour is a tiny bit cardboardy, really brings out the essences in the mussels I just ate interestingly. The overall flavour is quite ’dull’ and this somehow transposes into the sense of texture, though that is also noticeably soft. It was silly of me, but I was hoping for something a little more complex. Should’ve checked my BJCP guide. Still though, this would be ok for session drinking and good for those who prefer lighter flavours so I can understand it’s popularity. =46%

0,33 l bottle. Very dark amber in the glass, light tanned big head. Not a lot on the nose, maybe a little bit malt. Tastes like sweet toasted malt, bready. Pleasant sweetness. Okay if you get nothing else.

330ml bottle from Gourmondo.de. Clear caramel brown colour, medium rocky mostly vanishing white head, fair lacing. Moderately malty aroma of toast, nuts caramel and straw, light to moderate spicy hops and a hint of leather. Taste is initially lightly sweet and acidic turning into a bitter and meaty finish with an astringent feel. Medium body, oily texture, lively carbonation. Can understand why it’s the most popular altbier as it’s not particularly edgy but still a world apart from the other common varieties in Germany.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber with a thin off white head that doesn’t last for long. Nose is red fruit, malt, green leaves, black malt. Sweet with a bitter finish. Reminds me of John Smith’s or Tetley’s from a can (not a good thing).

Alengrin (2464) - BELGIUM - SEP 3, 2014
The most popular of the German Alts, with brownish, deep amber colour and creamy head; nice aroma with some sugary sweetness built on a lightly smoky and woody, even somewhat leathery maltiness and fruity accents. Pure malty taste, smooth and nutty, clean, restrained dried fruitiness and spicy hop bitterness in the finish. Not the greatest in its style by far but well-balanced and enjoyable.
