3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle, the labels reads 9.2% alc.,
this ale had a dark brown pour (there was some dark red or ruby at the edges of the glass) and it made a small cover of light tan bubbles that receded to a little island and ring, this drink looked viscous and left somewhat of a oily film on the glass when swirled, it was opaque and I could not see through the glass but I saw a small island of bubbles in the center of the beer and bubbles climbing up the sides of the glass, it left spots and fingers of lacing on the glass, the bottom of the bottle was covered with a layer of dark brown sediment,
this ale was malty, aromas of roasted malt, caramel and chocolate, with a little malt sweetness,
it had flavors of roasted malt that resembled a porter and/or stout drink, caramel, a little chocolate,
the finish was roasted malt and a little sweetness,
I think this drink had a over roasted malt hints to give smoke or burnt malt notes, instead I think it came across as malt astringency,
the mouth feel was more than medium, it coated the palate, and it felt a little creamy on the tongue,
a dark scotch ale, dark and roasted malt, very dark colored and roasted malt nose, more so than the typical Scotch ale,
roasted malt on the nose and mouth were more in line with a porter and/or stout beer, it was an ok drink but too much porter and stout nuances to be a great scotch ale.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a small dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light chocolate, raisin, prune, fig, light herbal, wood, peat smoke, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready/roast malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light chocolate, raisin, prune, fig, light herbal, wood, peat smoke, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, raisin, prune, fig, herbal, wood, light peat smoke, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/roast malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light dryness from roasted character as well. Light carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice scotch ale style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/roast malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark pour with a very thin head. Dark fruit, malt and smoke are apparent in the nose. More of the same on the tongue added by booze and peat. Palate is thick and lingers on the back of the tongue. Overall, not a straight up arse kicker but maybe a lass kicker. Might get again.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
bottle. Deep amber with small head. Amazingly, this doesnít really have any off flavors. Malty base. Light sweetness. Not very good, but definitely one of Schmohz better offerings.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle. Pours very dark brown to black with a tan head. Caramel and peaty malts briefly in the aroma, but then moving to cocoa and smoke, grape. Flavor leads with cocoa, then creaminess and dark fruit, roast and bits of peatiness and caramel. Itís really very good.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
My first Schmohz here. I didnít even know they bottled. This beer pours dark, with a smoky, burnt aroma. Smells like an imperial stout, maybe. The taste is wonderful - peaty, malty with a little bitterness. Not as smoky flavored or burnt as the aroma suggests. This one is quite similar to Dark Horseís Scotty Karate, which is one of my faves, yo. Excellent brew, and the price was right. I will definitely buy again.

1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20
Bottle. Wood, dark fruit, and sour aroma aroma. Black with almost no head and chunky tan sediment. Flavor is sour and awful, undrinkable, down the sink. The chunks in the bottle were the first indicator something was off, and the flavor clinches it. Bad bottle.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
tap at the brewpub last summer - Pours near black with a small head and a mild aroma of malt and dark fruit. The flavor is malty and... whatís this? It tastes off, sour... this beer is infected. It hasnít overwhelmed the other flavors in the beer yet, but itís working on it. Tap. From the brewpub. Unbelievable.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: FEB 16, 2013 Bottle. Pours a dark black. Small dark tan head. No lacing. Aroma of peat. Some earthiness in the flavor, but it was somewhat overshadowed by a sour tanginess. Noticed that comment in a prior rating so maybe this is either meant to be or its a common problem. Other than that issue this was a very nice beer.
Updated on 2/16/13 - Had this on tap last weekend at Schmohz taproom. Very similar, but without the sourness, so will assume the prior one was infected. Would definitely drink this again.
