BigBen2120 (688), Derry, New Hampshire, USA May 22, 2008 500ml brown bottle from The Lighthouse in Manchester. Pours a murky golden yellow body with a good inch of off-white head. Smells sweet and phenolic - with banana, nut, spice, citrus, and malt all playing big roles. Tastes very complex, sweet, spicy, grassy, malty... Nut, banana, lemon, spices, orange, hints of caramel malt... More hoppy than a lot of examples of the style I’ve tried, but only to balance the flavor out. Other than a slight hop flavor that lingers, the finish is otherwise fairly clean and rather dry. Rich full mouthfeel, yet ample carbonation and no alcohol flavor or warming makes this beer an easier drinker than expected. Wow, this beer is good. Extremely flavorful, complex, balanced and very drinkable. I’ll definitely be snagging a few bottles of this again, not only to compare to the Brooklyner-Schneider version, but also to see how it ages over the next few months (if I can wait that long!) MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada May 22, 2008 My Bottom Line:
An impressive equilibrum of herbal, spicy hoppiness, citrusy wheat, and banana/peach esters thrives throughout this marvelous hybrid of a Weizenbock.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A frothy cumulus of a head lingers atop the amber-infused golden (before the complete yeast pour, of course).
-Although the body is nourishing, it remains airy and amazingly drinkable for its size.
-There is no sign of the abv in the flavor profile.
-The ending is rather soft, offering mild leafy hop bitterness and milky, earthy yeastiness.
-The harmless yet furious tingling of a carbonation sure is peculiar, but it works perfectly.
-I don’t understand how this German-brewed version can be so much cheaper than its Brooklyn-brewed compatriot.
Bottle. after4ever (2711), Brier, Washington, USA May 21, 2008 500. Thanks, Skoi (and ACertain)! What a treat. Pours hazy bright gold with a creamy and persistent platinum blonde head. Big sweet banana, clove, and peach nose. Plenty of creamy goodness on the body. More bananas, clove, and peach on the mid-palate. Sweet and creamy but still refreshing enough to drink in the summer heat. Awesome. daniellerose7 (119), new york, New York, USA May 21, 2008 A very interesting beer- a traditional wheat beer but very strong! It is a little sweeter than your usual weizen bock, but the over 8% alcohol content is well cloaked. Tasty! skoisirius (570), Seattle, Washington, USA May 21, 2008 Updated: May 22, 2008Bottle thanks to acertain!!! Overall I was impressed. Those beautiful banana clove notes I love so well from the regular Scheider exist alongside an amazing, thick, and smooth malty body. Spices are a bit amped, and goes well. Alcohol is not detectable. Would love to get my hands on another! emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA May 19, 2008 Poured a really hazy orange yellow with a profuse creamy white head. The nose was really citrusy, lots of sweet citrusy hops, some wheat in the background and very mild banana. The aroma profile of a wheat beer is an easy one for the hops to dominate as they do in this. The flavor is citrusy and waxy, light bitterness, mild alcohol. Mouthfeel is full and smooth from the wheat, a decent amount of carbonation, and a waxy feel. Finishes citrusy and bitter and then fades to wheat and banana, a little warmth comes out as well. The wheat is the most prominent in the finish. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA May 19, 2008 The color was a very cloudy orange/yellow. The head was creamy, off-white, and laced some. The aroma was wheat, sweet, and citrisy hops. The flavor was wheat, citris hops, some spice, and alcohol. The palate was nicely carbonated. The finish was warm. Davinci (295), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 18, 2008 Standard hazy straw colored pour, with blooming white head. Nice sweet wheaty nose with assertive grassy/herbally hop presence. Flavor start with slight banana and clove components with a hint of vanilla. Hop character is bright and herballly, nice touch of grass and a hint of citrus. Hops check the esters and sweetness very well. Body is full and fluffy with sparkly almost champaign like carbonation. Some woody type notes on the finish. Very well crafted.
