tlind2 (560), Helsinki, Finland Dec 30, 2008 330 ml bottle. Murky reddish-brown color, off-white head. Ripe banana aroma, some alcohol. Heavy bitter flavor with some fruit and syrupy malts, some warming alcohol. Full body, very heavy carbonation. Not bad by any standard, but just like the regular Aventinus, it’s not really to my taste. fidelis83 (707), Clinton, Iowa, USA Dec 29, 2008 Pours very interestingbeer bottle brown with gold highlights at the bottom with lots of yeasty particulate floating around, head is light tan, shiny and fizzy, with bubbles slow to move through the beer, making even the appearance seem thick. I am not sure if this beer was meant to be swirled to remove the yeast from the bottom but I did. The yeast haze doesn’t really mix in at first. It leaves a milky caramel colored layer at the top, interesting! Aroma is big on wheat, banana, tart plum wine, tobacco, leather, a little roast and some very sweet caramel. Flavor is very interesting for me I have never had anything quite like this, sort of like a wheaty barleywine, wheatwine anyone? Starts off big on wheat malts, sweet and chewy, then some clove spice, slightly tart cherries, banana bread, caramel, chocolate, a decent amount of toast, dried plums, a touch of leather, dried leaf mustiness, and some sweet overripe citrus notes. Finish is overripe bananas, yeast spice, crusty tart cherry pie, plenty of fruity esters. I will say that although I really like this beer there is a not so great metallic aftertaste. Body is warm, thick, sweet and slick, but leads to a dry astringent finish. This is a very nice, complex beer. rosenbergh (843), Helsinki, Finland Dec 26, 2008 Updated: Jan 10, 2009330 ml bottle. 2008/44295. Finland.
Looks very much like regular Weizenbock, dark Weizen. Sweet fruity aroma with some alcohol present too. Flavour is warming alcohol with fruits and some Hefeweizen elements. Quite complex. Needs some time to drink. Rynoplasty (500), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Dec 25, 2008 Pours dark hazy reddish brown with a big cream colored head. Aroma is wheat, banana and sweet malts. Taste is nice sweet malts with malted wheat and banana flavor in there as well. Really nice. Belgian22 (6), Deerfield, Massachusetts, USA does not count Dec 23, 2008 Single bottle from Spirit Haus in Amherst, MA. Very deep and dark in the glass, I could immediately sense the classic Aventinus on overdrive when I put my nose in the glass. Sweet and rich. The alcohol is evident in brief moments, but overall hidden quite well. Being a huge fan of the classic, this was a real treat. Fantastic. I will be looking to pick up more of these. CanIHave4Beers (831), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Dec 22, 2008 The initial reaction to this was, well they should not have frozen perfectly good beer. I did warm up to it however. This pours a very dark hazy brown, with a head uncharacteristic of a weizen style, a little tight, not particularly fluffy, something more commonly seen on a stout or bock. This smells sweet with caramel and alcohol notes, I swear I smell just the faintest sour notes as well. There is plenty of flavor, the initial flavor was a big smack in the face with chocolate cherries and alcohol... mostly the latter. This does balance out after a few drinks and shows some delightful roastedness, and some fruity flavors of cherry and banana that sing over the spicy notes of this strong beer. ILduce (133), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 21, 2008 Updated: Mar 17, 2009in namesake glass @ Beer Bistro, Toronto: Murky brown with dissipating head. Powerful aromas of dark fruit and spice. Taste is dominated by sweet malts, plums and banana. Mild yeast and wheat character. Full-bodied with warm alcoholic palate. A fantastic seasonal beer. FatPhil (3443), Espoo, Finland Dec 17, 2008 330ml bottle - - Alko
Banana and hoppy aroma. Massive kick of hops in the mouth, and a fair burn of alcohol. A touch rough, but not that objectionable - it certainly warms on you. Warms in you too. I am hoping this will soften a bit with age, as the alcohol is too prominent currently. The malts and yeast need to turn fruitier and port-winey.
