CanIHave4Beers (831), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Dec 22, 2008 The initial reaction to this was, well they should not have frozen perfectly good beer. I did warm up to it however. This pours a very dark hazy brown, with a head uncharacteristic of a weizen style, a little tight, not particularly fluffy, something more commonly seen on a stout or bock. This smells sweet with caramel and alcohol notes, I swear I smell just the faintest sour notes as well. There is plenty of flavor, the initial flavor was a big smack in the face with chocolate cherries and alcohol... mostly the latter. This does balance out after a few drinks and shows some delightful roastedness, and some fruity flavors of cherry and banana that sing over the spicy notes of this strong beer. ILduce (133), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dec 21, 2008 Updated: Mar 17, 2009in namesake glass @ Beer Bistro, Toronto: Murky brown with dissipating head. Powerful aromas of dark fruit and spice. Taste is dominated by sweet malts, plums and banana. Mild yeast and wheat character. Full-bodied with warm alcoholic palate. A fantastic seasonal beer. Banana and hoppy aroma. Massive kick of hops in the mouth, and a fair burn of alcohol. A touch rough, but not that objectionable - it certainly warms on you. Warms in you too. I am hoping this will soften a bit with age, as the alcohol is too prominent currently. The malts and yeast need to turn fruitier and port-winey. MrChopin (621), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 16, 2008 Dark ruby with a large, fizzy near-white head. Nose of banana, spice, and an odd, off-putting cream. Warming alcohol comes out a little in the spicy flavor, some sugar adding to the already sweet Belgian flavor. Relatively carbonated for the medium body and a little too sticky for my preferences. Nice beer, but I think the best qualities here are found in greater abundance elsewhere.
vulcanmeister (102), La Grande, Oregon, USA Dec 15, 2008 Dark brown color, thin beige head. Aroma of fruit, yeast, and malt. Alcoholic overtones with a syrupy mouth feel. Sweet taste of raisins, plums, and toffee. Finishes with a long sweet balance of alcohol and raisins. terrybail (330), London, Ontario, Canada Dec 14, 2008 Updated: Apr 22, 2009500ml bottle from the LCBO
The aroma is banana and bready malts with the alcohol showing through
Pours a nice ruby dark brown with a big long lasting tan head
Now this is a winter warmer AMAZING bready banana sweet with the alcohol fairly well hidden
jmm1 (108), Andorra Dec 14, 2008 From bottle at the Weisse Brauhaus. Dark brown cloudy body with a off-white puffy head that lasts forever and leaves a heavy lacing. Plum, raisins, clove and cinnamon in a powerful nose with heavy esters. Highly complex in mouth with ripped banana, chocolate, dark cherries, plum hitting at some part or another. Port-like palate with a nice alcohol content and a sirrupy finish lighted by a subtle carbonation. Impressive beer but it is not an improvement over the normal weizenbock Aventinus. fredthecat (176), Canada Dec 10, 2008 smells really strongly of alcohol and a tiny bit like raisins. it fizzes alot like cocacola and even looks like it. it tastes like alcohol and heavy heavy raisin, dates etc.. and alot of candied sugar. the alcohol taste is in fact a nice bonus for me, but i can see how alot of people would hate it. its got a good mouthfeel, and oh man halfway through the bottle i can already really feel it hitting me. this is a pretty cool beer, didnt quite live up to its reputation, but almost, and the price per alcohol is pretty kick ass when you factor in the fact that it also tastes really good.
