mmmbeer (737), Austin, Texas, USA Jun 28, 2008 500mL bottle poured into my trusty stein- poured 10 percent murky, darkened amber-brown color, medium carbonation, off white head bubbled away with small features of lacing. Aroma of a nicely roasted wheat malt with notes of banana, clove, and grain alcohol. Hits the mouth with a medium body, malt is workable but kind of weak, a slight coffee note in the middle, finish of hard booze and a smile. Not for the faint of heart, but I like it. jcurtis55 (17), Plainfield, Indiana, USA Jun 24, 2008 My first experience with an Eisbock. Beer is a cloudy amber color, and given time some sediment collects in the bottom of the glass. It produced a nice 2-finger head and lacing was apparent as I drank it. Initially, right out of the fridge, the smell is all fruit. As it warms you begin to pick up the alcohol in the aroma. The front of the tongue gets a nice fruity-sweet taste, but the back of the tongue gets an aftertaste that is almost all alcohol. You also get a slight alcohol burn as it goes down, but that is slighter than you might expect given the ABV. Overall, I found this a pleasant beer to drink, but doubt I would ever drink more than one in an evening.
I would rate the flavor and palate another point higher if the alcohol level was hidden a little better, but I wouldn’t turn one of these down given another chance to drink one. lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jun 22, 2008 Beautiful dark brown color full of sediment with a quickly disappearing off white head. Nose is alcohol, bananas and cloves with a nice wheat malt sweetness underneath. Taste is nice and sweet like regular Aventinus. Not as much alcohol as the nose though it can definitely be felt. That smooth dark wheat dominates the palate but this beer remains light on the tongue. Nice through I think I prefer the standard Aventinus. basewars (144), Albany, New York, USA Jun 22, 2008 Pours dark brown with an off white head. Smells of banana and alcohol. Flavor is fruity up front but burns going down.
Too much alcohol flavor for my tastes, but definitely happy to try it. ChristianScheffel (4431), Odense, Denmark Jun 22, 2008 2006 vintage. Hazy brown with a small off-white head. The classic banana/clove aroma gets an extra figs and sherry twang. Flavour is sweetish with a hint of roast dryness, and definitely some alcohol balancing. Nice complexity of dried fruits. Too much alcohol heat? Probably, but I’m gonna cellar a couple of these for a few years. Crosling (1854), Loveland, Colorado, USA Jun 22, 2008 2004 vintage. Brown color with a fully developed, but then quickly diminishing white foam. Fairly powerful nose with hints of fresh pastries, apples, banana, vanilla, along with hints of blackberry and mocha. Flavor is loaded with complexity. A thick coating of caramel and toffee coats the palate, along with hints of fruit pie, vanilla and clove. Coating mouth feel. Wow, an intense, badass brew. Cybercat (778), Georgia, USA Jun 9, 2008 This comes out of the bottle a deep, semi-transparent brown with a thick beige head. Aroma is strong and malty with a hint of molasses and a touch of hops. Flavor is rich and smoky, mainly malty but with a little hop taste. Texture is fairly smooth and with a nice ragged alcohol bite. unclemike (834), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA Jun 9, 2008 Dark brown, unclear with frightening sediment. Powerful aroma, alchohol, fruitiness and raisins. Full bodied. Very sweet on the palate, raisins are the most dominent flavour, spice and berries, some banana. Strong and pleasant trace of warming alcohol on the finish, which grew consideribly as the beer approached room temp. A complex and interesting beer, although its individual componants are all great it doesn’t seem to marry perfectly for me. Still very nice though
