Commercial Description:
Aventinus, the Wheat Doppelbock of Bavaria, has always been known to be the most intense and complex wheat beer in the world. This was the case for the past sixty years, but not anymore...
Up until the 1940's, Aventinus was shipped all over Bavaria in containers lacking temperature control. Consequently, the precious drink partially froze during transportation. Unaware that the brew was concentrated by the separation of water from the liquid. People were baffled by this unique version of Aventinus. By chance, the first Aventinus Eisbock was created.
Well aware of this story, Hans Peter Drexler, brewmaster of the Schneider brewery, decided to recreate this classic "mistake" in a modern controlled facility. Thus, the Aventinus Eisbock is reborn sixty years later ... Prost!

11.2oz bottle, 2007 Vintage. Pours a dark, clear coffee color with a fleeting white head. Aroma is sweet and rich, with a strong roasted malt character complemented by spices, caramel, dark fruit, and a bit of syrupy hops. Taste is fairly full, with a powerful but smooth taste of alcohol, roasted malt, and dark fruit, giving way to a lingering sweeter finish of banana, brown sugar, and spices. A rich and delicious winter warmer.

[Courtesy of fonefan - to celebrate my 1400th rating] Dark brown with medium off white head. Sweet aroma with roasted malt, caramel and overripe fruits. Sweet complex flavor with roasted malt, overripe fruits and chocolate notes. Alcohol well hidden and it warms you up nicely in the end. Best german beer by far!

12 oz bottle from South bay drugs. Pours a murky brown color with a medium clumpy cream head that rapidly vanished. The aroma was medium-light with bananas and malts. The flavor is very complex with maple syrup, cane sugar, bananas, cloves and sour biscuits. The mouthfeel is malty, creamy and very satisfying. The finish is long and sweet. Overall: A Superb brew.

0.5l bottle. Pours an opaque, hazy brown with no head. Smell is a very sweet combination of malt and grapes. Palette is smooth and a little thick. Very strong, complex flavour, consisting of grapes, malt, wheat, cloves and banana.

Cloudy reddish hue with thick head. Nose is clove, some smoke and banana. Taste- very rich brew- honey sweetness with the spicy malts. Finish is hot and dry. Mouthfeel is thick but not too syrupy. This is the definition of liqiud bread. Drinkability is high given the booze level in it. Luckily the richness counterbalances as more than a couple bottles of this would be a quick end to the evening. Very nice beer.

2002 Vintage. Bottle No. 12970. 330 ml bottle very, very, generously given to me by Indra. Pour is almost clear deep burgundy with a surprisingly big, 1 1/2 inch tan head. I was amazed that a six year old beer still looked this alive. The head fell quickly. Aroma of dense, sweet, cooking cane sugar along with melting caramel. Also some floral notes, and a round maltiness. Taste is big sweetness, again more of the slightly cooked cane sugar. The maltiness translates to an almost English Barley Wine style biscuit maltiness. A touch of oxidation appears in the after taste, though it detracts in no way from the overall taste of this one. The alcohol really never was present - age apparently helps a lot on this front. The palate was big and sturdy holding all of the big flavors in this nicely. As this warmed (initial temp was about 55) it took on a Tawny Port character which was quite pleasant. I really enjoyed this one, thanks a million Eric!

a good beer. But when it comes to aventinus you cant beat the original. I only suggest the eisbock if you want the extra alcohol or like a really sweet powerfull tasting beer.
