Aventinus, the Wheat Doppelbock of Bavaria, has always been known to be the most intense and complex wheat beer in the world. This was the case for the past sixty years, but not anymore...
Up until the 1940’s, Aventinus was shipped all over Bavaria in containers lacking temperature control. Consequently, the precious drink partially froze during transportation. Unaware that the brew was concentrated by the separation of water from the liquid. People were baffled by this unique version of Aventinus. By chance, the first Aventinus Eisbock was created.
Well aware of this story, Hans Peter Drexler, brewmaster of the Schneider brewery, decided to recreate this classic "mistake" in a modern controlled facility. Thus, the Aventinus Eisbock is reborn sixty years later ... Prost!

Pours clear with an off-white head from a bottle. Very murky but surprisingly light brown. Nose has banana, sweet malt, alcohol and chocolate. Mouth is Liquorice, fruits and a nice bouquet of malty flavours. Taste is sweet with maybe a hint of saltiness. Body is full with a sticky texture and finish is medium. A nice way to celebrate the first snow of the winter.

Murky dark brown to black, dense light brown head is short. Sweet with ripe fruits like banana, apple, alcohol, herbs, yeast, plum. Crisp, medium body, alcohol evident, long finish with ripe fruits...and alcohol. Just an opinion but I did not much like this, lots of alcohol and ripe fruits. It’s complex, nuanced but this was obviously wrong day for this much flavor. Well-done beer with lots to analyze/enjoy anyway.

Outstanding. Intensive plums in the foreground. Warming, but not dominating, alcohol. Rich texture. What bothers me are the disguisting fluffies and a little gushing I had.

UPDATED: NOV 19, 2014 There aren’t many Eisbocks in their own country of origin and this is a relatively new one, but already a classic. Pours a very deep and dark mahogany brown colour, cloudy, under a crackling, light beige, moussy head slowly dissolving under influence of the considerable ABV but nevertheless retaining quite well; upon opening the bottle, it slowly creeped up the neck, so a certain form of gushing can be observed here. Powerful aroma of intense maltiness and fruitiness, overripe bananas and banana liqueur, the kind of chocolate sauce one pours over a dame blanche, amaretto, kahlua, butterscotch, cloves, something vaguely ’animalistic’ (leather?), raisins, candied dates, slight wheatiness, pipe tobacco, Belgian chocolates, brown rhum, cinnamon, apple cake, sour apple peel, fresh oranges, bayleaf. Taste immediately ’attacks’ with a big but noble sweetness, candied fruits and bananas everywhere, oily, thick and near syrupy mouthfeel, chocolate sauce, caramel candy, medium carbonation, smooth and evolving into a rich finish of profound and chewy bittersweet chocolatey maltiness, sugary liqueur effects with strongly warming, drying but not obnoxious alcohol, a light wheaty sourishness with enlightening effect and a gentle but noticeable, herbal hoppiness; the caramelly sweetness is what lasts the longest. Fantastic and a must taste for those who appreciate thick and big, dark, sweet ales; its deep chocolatey maltiness is somewhat reminiscent of the best of Belgian trappist abts or dark Christmas ales. Delicious dessert beer and a great sipper for a cold winter evening.
