Commercial Description:
Aventinus, the Wheat Doppelbock of Bavaria, has always been known to be the most intense and complex wheat beer in the world. This was the case for the past sixty years, but not anymore...
Up until the 1940's, Aventinus was shipped all over Bavaria in containers lacking temperature control. Consequently, the precious drink partially froze during transportation. Unaware that the brew was concentrated by the separation of water from the liquid. People were baffled by this unique version of Aventinus. By chance, the first Aventinus Eisbock was created.
Well aware of this story, Hans Peter Drexler, brewmaster of the Schneider brewery, decided to recreate this classic "mistake" in a modern controlled facility. Thus, the Aventinus Eisbock is reborn sixty years later ... Prost!

This beer pours like a dark cola-product with a head that fizzes away in mere seconds. A dark, garnet body holds light effervescence but also hides large chunks of particulate within the depths of its darkness. Aroma is alcohol and molasses with dark fruit and a hint of banana with a sharp, metallic note that comes in through the mouth. This beer’s presence is rather muggy (hot & sticky) with rich malts, thick cherry juice and crisp spicing. Some unseen prickly carbonation carries the alcohol to all the nooks and crannies of your mouth and sinuses. Whoo... nice. Flavorful and full-bodied, this beer did not quite come across "complex" as described, but I would say that it’s "intoxicatingly delicious."

I would advise my buddy Gene to stay away from this one because he tends to have a <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/avery-the-mahara time with higher alcohol beers.

330ml bottle. Cloudy brown colour, beige head. Aroma is twisted: banana with some earth, licorice and flowers. Taste isn’t too heavy or creamy, and medium carbonation lightens the taste. Cherries, spices and various fruits. Alcohol leaves creamy toffee-like layer on your mouth for quite a while. Very nicely balanced.

Draft @ de Paas. Nose is dark malted wheat cereal with a touch of banana and raisin. Flavor is the nose, but much more pronounced fruits (figs, prunes and the ’classic’ hefe flavors of banana with a touch of herbalness) -a very vinous finish reminiscient of a well-aged zinfandel. Booze is noticeable throughout, though it’s well integrated with the dark fruits. One tasty beverage.

Bottle. The aroma is very malty, reminds me of fresh bread and milk chocolate, nice smell. The small beige creamy head has a long duration, the body is nearly black. The taste is very malty, some chocolate, the finish is a little bit alcoholic. The body is strong, creamy and with a normal carbonation.

Extremely pungent. Alcohol, cloves, spices, tons of yeast. Brown in colour, huge head, beautiful head sadly dissipates fairly quickly. This is an extremely potent beer, you are hit with alcohol up front. Thick, very very full bodied, very spicy, with a yeasty aftertaste. The alcohol covers up the subtle flavours which make the standard Aventinus great, although it is very nice to have the warmth of 12% alcohol on a cold Canadian winter night. Very smooth, winey, and boozy. A good beer, but not quite as great as Aventinus.

Bottle. Slightly chilled in a snifter. It’s brown with an amber hue in the light. Grape big league chew in the aroma, raisin, sugar, bubblegum. Mouthfeel is full, fairly thick and smooth. Alcohol is quite well masked in the flavour. There’s sweet raisin, grape, cherry, some pumpernickel bread. Finishes long.

11.2 ounce bottle in snifter. Dark reddish brown with ring and a little lace. Rich plummy tangy woody earthy grassy aroma with hint of caramel. Sweet toasted caramel with mildly tangy dark fruit and earthy woody finish with some warmth and bite. Fun to try but a little over-the-top and slightly harsh.

0.33l 2008/24221 - Cloudy brown with light tan head that stayed for a while. Flowery, spring-like nose with some sweet malt notes. Yeasty bread with hints of booze at end.

Location: 11.2 oz bottle from Norm’s, 1/26/10
2008 Bottle, #16648

Aroma: Lots of dried fruits, some dark malts, caramel, booze, and some sugary sweetness.
Appearance: This one pours a murky, dark brownish-orange color with a minimal (light brown) head.
Flavor: Taste is quite sweet, somewhat complex in flavor, some spice, wheat, and some fruit.
Palate: This one has a pretty full body, the booze are there, particularly in the finish.
Overall Impression: This beer is pretty interesting. Certainly a sipper. The booze is certainly present, and you can feel it, but I don’t think it takes away from the beer at all. There is a lot of stuff going on with this beer, quite complex. I like it, but it isn’t something I would want to drink all the time.
