Commercial Description:
Aventinus, the Wheat Doppelbock of Bavaria, has always been known to be the most intense and complex wheat beer in the world. This was the case for the past sixty years, but not anymore...
Up until the 1940's, Aventinus was shipped all over Bavaria in containers lacking temperature control. Consequently, the precious drink partially froze during transportation. Unaware that the brew was concentrated by the separation of water from the liquid. People were baffled by this unique version of Aventinus. By chance, the first Aventinus Eisbock was created.
Well aware of this story, Hans Peter Drexler, brewmaster of the Schneider brewery, decided to recreate this classic "mistake" in a modern controlled facility. Thus, the Aventinus Eisbock is reborn sixty years later ... Prost!

Pours a deep amber mahagony with lots of yeast floaties and a thin white lasting head. Very complex spicy yeasty aroma with lots of caramel, spices, banana, clove, more frutiy esters, apple, pear. Flavor has tons of caramel wheat, munich and a bit of chocolate malt, fruity complex esters, more plum banana etc. Smooth yeastiness, wheat and a long sweet finish. Not cloying , just complex as hell. Awesome beer. This is pretty much the exemplary beer of the style.

Pours quite amazing. I watched as the huge sediment chunks were sucked upwards with the bubbles and then slowly floated back only to repeat the process. Deep chocolate, muddy brown. Bottle conditioned? Oh ya. Good beige-rich yellow head. Smells of a good amount of crisp hops upon opening. Wow. Slowly overpowered by the nice spicy wheat and bananas/clove aroma. Alcohol as well. Opens up with lots of alcohol. Very strong beer. As it warms and breathes, it becomes quite similar to the weizenbock with more alcohol, and less wheat taste. Still a bit watery at the finish, but maybe some more chocolate flavors become more easily detectable. I would be interested to try some cellared eisbock as I would agree the young eisbock is better than their young weizenbock (if you can get past the alcohol).

330ml bottle - - Alko
Banana and hoppy aroma. Massive kick of hops in the mouth, and a fair burn of alcohol. A touch rough, but not that objectionable - it certainly warms on you. Warms in you too. I am hoping this will soften a bit with age, as the alcohol is too prominent currently. The malts and yeast need to turn fruitier and port-winey.

Bottle at the Weisses Brauhaus, Munchen, Germany, 25-01-08 This poured into it’s own rather natty dedicated glass, a slimline affair that widens on the halfway point with frosted glass at the bottom, probably to look a bit icy. The beer was a deep dark brown with a wonderful creamy off-white head. Chocolate, banana and alcohol tickle the nostrils and then the flavour assault begins, sweet malts, dark fruits, banana again and that alcohol forever skulking around waiting with a wry smile on its face for the moment when you get off that stool all jelly legged like Bambi on ice. I can imagine that this wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste, sometimes the alcohol can be just a tad harsh, but I loved it for what it was, which I would regard as a seriously steroided up dark wheat beer.

(500ml bottle) Pours a thin, almond head with a deep mahogany body. Aroma of super sweet caramel malt. The strong molasses flavour mixed with caramel and plums. Good but too sweet for me...

bottle, thanks to Bochum! Cloudy very dark brown colour, large head. Sweet and malty nose. Intensive flavours of malt, roasted malt, chocolate and a tiny and shy touch of coffee. Hints of berries. A very nice experience.

330 ml bottle poured a cloudy garnet with a small, diminishing amber head. Aromas of plums, raisins, molasses and toffee. Palate was medium bodied. Flavors of plum, molasses, toffee and malt with a warming, lingering sweet finish.
