Commercial Description:
Aventinus, the Wheat Doppelbock of Bavaria, has always been known to be the most intense and complex wheat beer in the world. This was the case for the past sixty years, but not anymore...
Up until the 1940's, Aventinus was shipped all over Bavaria in containers lacking temperature control. Consequently, the precious drink partially froze during transportation. Unaware that the brew was concentrated by the separation of water from the liquid. People were baffled by this unique version of Aventinus. By chance, the first Aventinus Eisbock was created.
Well aware of this story, Hans Peter Drexler, brewmaster of the Schneider brewery, decided to recreate this classic "mistake" in a modern controlled facility. Thus, the Aventinus Eisbock is reborn sixty years later ... Prost!

4 year old cellared bottle. Pours dark brown with just a faint dappling of tan bubbles. Smells of alcohol, dark fruit (mostly raisins, some plums, some cherries), sugar, earthy. Tastes of molasses, roasted malt, a lot of residual sugar that balances out the percievable alcohol nicely, some spicy elements, licorice. Mouthfeel is full bodies and oily. Finish yields some sweetness and warming alcohol. I don’t think I could drink more than a few ounces of this at a time, but it would make for a great desert drink in place of a cordial.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Deep brown with a ruby tint. Deep rich aroma, cloves and cardamom, dark chocolate and heavy chocolatey toasted wheat character. Soft rum and plum with a bit of peppery spice as well. Stewed fruit and cinnamon. Very wintery brew. The palate is soft and silky with heavy yeasty spice and lots of rich sweet dried fruits. Dark chocolate, light licorice and prune/raisins. Rummy sweetness. As it warms the peppery alcohol really comes through and starts to detract from the other great fruity/spicy characteristics. The clovey spice and even a touch of smokiness still comes through nicely, but it gets a bit out of balance. I prefer the regular weizenbock to this.

Dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is of apple crisp, some cinnamon and cardamom, very sweet malts. Taste is harsh, very carbonated, but really overpowering with a sharp alcohol bite. Really disappointed that the aroma didn't carry over to the flavor. Fizzy, thick and syrupy, some burnt peaches and wood in the finish. I'm not sold on this one.

A rich brown body with a thin light brown head... then an acrid, bitter aroma.. which I kind of liked. It makes a thick, rich mouth-feel with a caramel maltiness. The finish is surprizingly clean, considering the thickness of the brew. Not bad.

This is truly an anomaly amongs other eisbocks. A voluminous head on a high ETOH beer. Great weiss flavors with a warming feel. Perhaps a bit more ’fizz’ distracts slightly.

Bottle@Home, thanks Savad. Banana, toffee and malty aroma. Brown color, beige/greyish head, good lace. Sweet, light bitter, banana, vanilla, toffee, some herbs. Soft and smooth. Straightforward German beer but very flavourful.

Dark brown color with light head and no lacing (actually more than I would expect for this high of an ABV). The aroma is lightly hoppy with a cherry, bockish quality to it. One aroma stands out that doesn't quite please me is a fresh outhouse smell. The flavor is lightly sweet with complex malt and yeast filling out the back. Some fruity flavors are there with a pear, raisin end to the flavor. Finishes with a nice alcohol sting and warmth feeling. Overall this had an almost positive and negative aspect compared to the regular aventinus.

Bottle. Poured a reddish brown with a spare heaad that diminished quickly. Heavy port and sweet aroma with a small alcohol tone. Medium to full body with a sticky texture. Heavy sweet small bitter flavor with a long finish. Eisbock’s are always interesting to sample.
