Commercial Description:
Aventinus, the Wheat Doppelbock of Bavaria, has always been known to be the most intense and complex wheat beer in the world. This was the case for the past sixty years, but not anymore...
Up until the 1940's, Aventinus was shipped all over Bavaria in containers lacking temperature control. Consequently, the precious drink partially froze during transportation. Unaware that the brew was concentrated by the separation of water from the liquid. People were baffled by this unique version of Aventinus. By chance, the first Aventinus Eisbock was created.
Well aware of this story, Hans Peter Drexler, brewmaster of the Schneider brewery, decided to recreate this classic "mistake" in a modern controlled facility. Thus, the Aventinus Eisbock is reborn sixty years later ... Prost!

Bottle at the Weisses Brauhaus, Munchen, Germany, 25-01-08 This poured into it’s own rather natty dedicated glass, a slimline affair that widens on the halfway point with frosted glass at the bottom, probably to look a bit icy. The beer was a deep dark brown with a wonderful creamy off-white head. Chocolate, banana and alcohol tickle the nostrils and then the flavour assault begins, sweet malts, dark fruits, banana again and that alcohol forever skulking around waiting with a wry smile on its face for the moment when you get off that stool all jelly legged like Bambi on ice. I can imagine that this wouldn’t be to everyone’s taste, sometimes the alcohol can be just a tad harsh, but I loved it for what it was, which I would regard as a seriously steroided up dark wheat beer.

Bottle, December 2007. This thing is beautiful, pours light brown, then smells of dried raisins, plums. It has a nice mouthfeel, relatively thick and full, tastes sweet with dark fruit, raisins, cherry, prune, chocolate, alcohol.

Copper tinted dark brown, some long-lasting creamy head. Strong sweet nose, some graininess, light clove and banana notes. Somewhat metallic aroma. Strong alcohol character, ethyl and fusel, strong sweetness. Warm and robust alcohol burning. Light fruitiness, a note of bitterness. Strong but not overpowering, fades quickly to a residual sweet malty effect. Lingering roasted character.
