Aventinus, the Wheat Doppelbock of Bavaria, has always been known to be the most intense and complex wheat beer in the world. This was the case for the past sixty years, but not anymore...
Up until the 1940’s, Aventinus was shipped all over Bavaria in containers lacking temperature control. Consequently, the precious drink partially froze during transportation. Unaware that the brew was concentrated by the separation of water from the liquid. People were baffled by this unique version of Aventinus. By chance, the first Aventinus Eisbock was created.
Well aware of this story, Hans Peter Drexler, brewmaster of the Schneider brewery, decided to recreate this classic "mistake" in a modern controlled facility. Thus, the Aventinus Eisbock is reborn sixty years later ... Prost!

330ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a large light beige head, which lasts well and leaves decent lacing. Savoury cured meat notes mix with Turkish coffee, bittersweet dark chocolate and spice, with cloves particularly noticeable. Concentrated dark chocolate and Turkish coffee up front slide smoothly into weighty, savoury flavours of cured meats and dark bread in the mid-palate. There is a touch of typical weizen banana and cloves, wrapped up in bittersweet cocoa, leading through into a savoury, spicy finish. This is one serious beer: an intense, concentrated blend of dark, bittersweet and savoury flavours. Excellent stuff.

Aroma of malt, some sugary sweetness, raisins, plums, maybe fig and dates?. Taste is the same. Almost has a bit of a oaky feel. Strong but very balanced. Doesn't taste sweet (sweet, but not sugary sweet) for how strong it is, almost has a bit of a Belgian quad feel to it. Very complex. Dark fruits, lots of malt, lots of flavor. Very nice winter beer in front of a fireplace. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Murky brown colour, small beige head. Soft carbonation. Aroma of plums, banana, toffee and caramel. Fruity with sweet aftertaste. Warming alcoholic finish. Good, but a tad too sweet in my opinion.

0.33 l bottle from Alko. Brown colour, big head. Taste is very complex with sweet dark malts, some hops and some fruits or bananas from the yeast. Wait, this has 12% alcohol? Does not taste that strong, so beware when you drink it.

Turboninja (96) - Tampere, FINLAND - DEC 5, 2014
Strong aroma with banana, sweet fruits and caramel. Dark brown/orange with hazy liquid. Minimal, natural white head. Strong, very balanced taste with dominating banana, caramel, toffee and fruits. Alcohol quite present but stylishly in background. Wide taste spectrum and long aftertaste with banana, sweet fruits and caramel. Thick/medium palate with medium/light carbonation. Overall a "supercharged Aventinus". A hint of extra malts and thickness could be rewarded by 5.

Dark brown beer with a dark beige foam. Banana, yeast, ash, bread, caramel aromas. Reminds you of sahti aromawise. Crispy mouthfeel. Banana, a lot of sweet liquorice and a little bit saltiness as well. Has a twist of anis too. A lot of flavor and spicyness. The strong taste makes this a slow beer for peaceful moments.

APPEARANCE - Dark, opaque, 2-finger head that dissipates. Foamy. A little lacing. AROMA/SCENT - Fruits, grass, sweet. TASTE - Malts, yeast, sweet, nutty. MOUTHFEEL/PALATE/TEXTURE - Thick, little carbonation, smooth, creamy, syrupy. VALUE - $6.49 for 11.2 oz - good for an import. OVERALL/DRINKABILITY - A likable dark beer. Not overly boozy. Goes down nice.
