jcurtis55 (16), Plainfield, Indiana, USA Jun 24, 2008 My first experience with an Eisbock. Beer is a cloudy amber color, and given time some sediment collects in the bottom of the glass. It produced a nice 2-finger head and lacing was apparent as I drank it. Initially, right out of the fridge, the smell is all fruit. As it warms you begin to pick up the alcohol in the aroma. The front of the tongue gets a nice fruity-sweet taste, but the back of the tongue gets an aftertaste that is almost all alcohol. You also get a slight alcohol burn as it goes down, but that is slighter than you might expect given the ABV. Overall, I found this a pleasant beer to drink, but doubt I would ever drink more than one in an evening.
I would rate the flavor and palate another point higher if the alcohol level was hidden a little better, but I wouldn’t turn one of these down given another chance to drink one.
nqualls (575), Tennessee, USA Dec 1, 2008 Bottle. Poured a cloudy brown color with a small white head. Aroma of wheat and bananas. Flavor was sweet with bananas and a good alcohol warming finish. I prefer the regular Aventinus, but this was good. mjs (646), Helsinki, Finland Nov 28, 2008 (Bottle) Dark brown. Cloudy. Quickly disappearing medium sized fizzy white head. Malty aroma with banana, bit like sahti. Full bodied palate with lot of carbonation. Banana, alcohol, malts, salty liquorice and sweetness in strong taste. Long lasting aftertaste wiht banana and sweetness. Archibaldo de la Cruz (174), Finland Nov 28, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown colour with a medium sized off-white head. The aroma is sweet, banana, some fruits and wheat. The flavour is sweet malt with notes of wheat, banana, raisin, yeast and some alcohol in the finish. Medium to full-bodied. Very nice brew, but I prefer the normal Aventinus. mikkopen (139), Oulu, Finland Nov 20, 2008 Hazy dark brown colour, thin light beige head. Strong aroma of banana and wheat, with some spices and a hint of alcohol. A bit too much carbonation on the palate. Malty banana flavour, with alcohol very clearly present. Long warm aftertaste. luttonm (96), Seattle, Washington, USA Nov 20, 2008 Bottle. Hazy, deep brown with creamy head. Bright carbonation, not too heavy on the tongue. Caramel and anise on the nose. Flavor is a bit tart/sour with lots of bright malts. Sticky-sweet, very concentrated flavor. Wonderful, a staple.
