Deep and complex – for big and relaxing moments by the fire.

Dark-ruby colored wheat doppelbock with a creamy fine head. Strong notes of ripe bananas, raisins and plums meet liquorice and roasty aromes. Full-bodied and warming, with a well-balanced and smooth finish. The ideal companion for hearty roast meat, venison and also fruity chocolate desserts, “Kaiserschmarrn” (pancakes), “Elisenlebkuchen” (christmas cookies) or blue cheese.

Oldest wheat doppelbock of Bavaria. Since 1907. 18.5°

Pours brown at the top tapering down to ruby towards the bottom of the glass and cloudy. Amazing thick offwhite head. Aroma first was orange citrus then a prevailing clove aroma struck my notrils. I swirled and sniffed the top of the glass for a good 5 minutes before I realized it was clove I was smelling. The flavor is very complex. Many fruity notes malt wheat yeast and citrus all come out in this beer. The palate is amazingly light for a beer of this color. The palate starts off with sweet then moves to citrus and the clove flavor leaves you wanting more it is very smooth. A tasty brew. I’m glad I gave this style a try. Very nice.

UPDATED: JAN 23, 2006 Its not as good as I had expected, and hard to rate because it has some unusual qualities. Aroma is strong and smells like root beer and licorice. Nice reddish brown color and decent head. Taste is sweet, spicy and complex but not as good as I had hoped for. I detect some raisins and licorice, vanilla and cloves. Which you might think would be reminiscent of a Christmas beer but in this case the combination does not work very well. Also too much alcohol taste. Very much a niche beer. Aftertaste is fruity and warm.

500ml bottle. Served in a NB worthy glass at 41.3°. Pours a reddish brown color with a small "hazy" head that vanished quickly the first time, the second time I was roughing the beer in the cup and it gave me a bubbly little head that dies quickly, too. The aromas are bananas foster, brown sugar, prunes, some spice, and some cleaness (avoids the malt from getting too malty and cloying) coming from hops?, aclohol?, I don’t know, but it is appreciated. This has the nice flavor profile, like the eisbock, but lacks it’s scorting alcohol heat. Nice body, real tasty.

UPDATED: OCT 30, 2006 Bottled, poured out into an Aventinus glass. Pours a dark healthy brown. Smell is of fruit and wheat. Taste is citrussy with some lemony bite. An excellent beer.

2001 bottle: Smells lightly sour with some underlying nuttiness. Tastes of slight alcohol, but the flavors of the fruit and nuts have blended beautifully.

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2005 Creamy and adherent foam, good persistence. Interesting color, darker than a dunkel weizen. Darkest brown, fizzy and lightly dense. Rich and spiced scent. Toasted and lightly bitter. Long and pleasant finish. Remarkable alcoholic tenor, much balanced one.

UPDATED: APR 4, 2010 Pictureqsue clear brown beer, with golden fringes. Quickly fading bubbly white head. Strong wheaty fruit notes in the aroma. Very dominating aroma. Very crisp sugary wheat. Good presence of malt, backed by a banana tone, complexed a little with light berry. An extremely crisp refreshing beer. Leaves a pleasent smack of caramel behind.
