UPDATED: FEB 8, 2007 A German Dopplebock that drinks like a yeasty Belgian. Is there a better beer? No adjectives, just know if you like either style, this beer is near-perfect. Well, only thing wrong may be a slightly off color. OK, I’m reaching. The perfect beer.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Brown color. Huge ever-growing sustaining head and intense carbonation. Aroma of banana and cloves. Flavor evolves mainly around banana and cloves with some caramel and perhaps milk-chocolate. Quite sweet with a sour finish. Very round, luxurious mouthfeel. Despite being quite sweet and nevertheless its strong alcohol content, VERY drinkable, dangerous actually. My only complaint is it felt a little dull in the end since the carbonation was down. Yet, one of my all-time favorites.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours a somewhat murky dark brown with a nice, lasting beige head. Aroma is complex... when first opened and poured cold, it was mainly fruity/banana with some clove, but as it warmed it took on more of a chocolate/plum character. Nice creamy and carbonated mouthfeel. Initially very malty, but fades into a dried fruit, cherry/date, yeasty middle finally finishing with a bit of alcohol and stickyness. Yummy.

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Brewery aged 2001 bottle. Birch beer in color with tan head that dissipates completely. Aroma is of stewed fruit, apricot, and dark malt. Fairly soft and round on the palate with enough carbonation to make it crisp. Taste is of dark malt, slightly fruity, traces of coffee and clove. Five years has mellowed this usually very potent beer. I prefer a fresh Aventinus, but this is a nice change.
