Deep and complex – for big and relaxing moments by the fire.

Dark-ruby colored wheat doppelbock with a creamy fine head. Strong notes of ripe bananas, raisins and plums meet liquorice and roasty aromes. Full-bodied and warming, with a well-balanced and smooth finish. The ideal companion for hearty roast meat, venison and also fruity chocolate desserts, “Kaiserschmarrn” (pancakes), “Elisenlebkuchen” (christmas cookies) or blue cheese.

Oldest wheat doppelbock of Bavaria. Since 1907. 18.5°

500 mL bottle. Rich, smooth mouthfeel. Soothes the throat like honey. Also has some honey in the flavor, which plays with the alcohol nicely. Nutty maltiness throughout. Surprisingly, some tart sourness in the back, evoking cherries, grapes and cranberries. Clove is certainly in there as well. This is a good beer out of the bottle, but it really explodes on tap. Unfortunately, this review is just of the bottle.

Bottle brewed in 2001. Pours a hazy orange rust color with a super fizzy head. A very fruity aroma, cherry and cloves are coming to mind as well as a little alcohol. The taste is sweet and fruity as well...getting the same cherry/clove comination as well as some mild alcohol flavor. This is a very carbonated beer with, again, a mild alocohol burn in a couple spots with a very dry finnish. It’s pretty light all the way across the tounge and comes out pretty refreshing if a bit too carbonated.

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2006 Draught (7-4-7-3-15=3.6) – Fresh fruity nose with lots of Banana in it, later it reveals deeper spicy malt notes (not really any bock character in the nose); It has a super fresh body with some fill to it and an incredible sparkle (champagne-like); The bock character appears in a very long finish together with the classic acidity of the weizen beer. Somehow a strange beer, not typically bock neither a typically weizen. Bottle – Brown unclear with huge white head that falls fast; Clove, banana, raisins, bock character in a quite big nose; Very well balanced body with some acidity and a huge carbonation; Exploding finish, huge, chewy because of complexity, not because it is super thick, is it long too. Great beer with lots of character, better then the draught version.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2013 Deep brown-red colour with a thick white head. The aroma is really complex, there is spices, clove, apple, banana, alcohol... It is full bodied, taste is very complex too, with spices, clove, banana and caramel, really malty. Excellent beer overall. The 8% of alcohol is well hidden.

Bottle. Had a little bit from my friends. Quite good actually. Slightly fruity flavor, with roasted malt on top.

Sampled from bottle provided by dickinsonbeer. Poured a deeper reddish/brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas and tastes of bananas, cloves, wheat and some citrus. Newer bottle tried next to a ’99 vintage. The ’99 was oxidized and quite boring while the newer one rocked.

Thanks to dickinsonbeer. Pours a red/brown amber with an average off white head. Aroma of banana, wheat, light citrus and some roasted malts. Flavors of the same, nice and smooth.

Bottle and on-tap. It was a rich redish brown color. It had a huge creamy white head somewhere between 2-3 inches tall and it did not go away fast. When I had Aventinus on-tap at the Brick Store Pub in Decatur it had a very pronounced taste of clove and was very complex with hints of fruits and a slight banana flovor. It was listed as 9.4% ABV, but you’d never know it. I couldn’t wait to get a bottle from Green’s and try it again. I did. One word, BANANA! That’s it nothing else came through. I found Aventinus again at another place and got another bottle. It was almost like what I had on-tap. I think it has to do with the age of the beer.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2007 Pours a tawny amber color w/ a full, semi creamy froth. Superb hangtime receding to a full ring and canopy lace. Aromas of malted bananas and mildly medicinal. Medium nectar w/ ample residual effers. The texture expands to pillowy soft and chewy effers. Mildly sweet w/ a predominance of malt character. Flavors of spicey banana bubble gum, slight medicine, angotura bitters, rootbeer, and a touch of sour dark fruit that persits from start to finish. The finsh is long w/ a mild sweetness and a tart bittering component.
