COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep and complex – for big and relaxing moments by the fire.

Dark-ruby colored wheat doppelbock with a creamy fine head. Strong notes of ripe bananas, raisins and plums meet liquorice and roasty aromes. Full-bodied and warming, with a well-balanced and smooth finish. The ideal companion for hearty roast meat, venison and also fruity chocolate desserts, “Kaiserschmarrn” (pancakes), “Elisenlebkuchen” (christmas cookies) or blue cheese.

Oldest wheat doppelbock of Bavaria. Since 1907. 18.5°

Very earthy. A sharp almost Belgian carbonation, but not unpleasant. Pretty complex flavors. Makes me rethink my dislike of weis biers. I think I like this one.

Some nice caramel aroma. Full body, nice finish. Lot of flavors without a strong alcohol taste. Excellent.

On draught at Ludwig’s Garten in Philadelphia. Light brown pour with very large head. Grassy aroma with some clove essence. Difficult to differentiate any other aromas. Earthy flavor with a light hop presence. A little coriander and some spice. Easy drinking, alcohol is masked nicely.

One of my favourites. Pours a ruby tea colour with an indominable white head. Cloves and banana bread strike the nose at first wiff. These notes are repeated in the taste while adding a bit of caramel and cocoa. Not as heavy on the palate as one would think for an 8 percent ABV beer. I could drink one every day and not get tired of it. Be careful though as while it drinks very easily it does pack a punch

Finally get around to rating this classic. After pouring from the bottle into a weizenglass, my beer looked just like the photo: thick long lasting head atop ruby red brew. If it weren’t for the clove notes, I’d think this were a belgian strong ale: many complex flavors well blended in this rich brew.

UPDATED: JUL 30, 2004 Bottle Pours a cloudy reddish brown. Not a particularly attractive color. Small white head that lasts a bit. Too coarse for any real lacing. Aroma is very nice. Fruity, Musty, and spicy. Apples, cinnamon and cloves. Quite high carbonation that gets in the way imediately after a sip. The head is maintained byt the profuse carbonation coming up constantly. You can see at the top the bubbles boiling up. Full complicated flavors. ABV masked well. Finish is somewhat dry with no real bitterness.

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2004 this is the first time i have ever purchased a case of beer a on recommendations alone, but glad i did because this is one amazing beer! pours kind of murky even when poured slowly and head dissipates quickly. sort of a dark golden amber color when held up to a light. many different aromas rise from the glass it’s tough to distinguish all of them, banana, some other fruit but can’t decide just what it is. caramel is there but lightly, nice malt flavor. perhaps a bit more epervescent that i am used to but no big problem. finish is slightly warm but no noticable alcohol taste or smell, a slight clove taste at the finish. this bottle is fresh, could not find a vintage but sure plan to age some for about a year! wow...this is a wonderful yet confusing beer, easy to drink!

Pours deep copper/burgundy with a big white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, fruit, nuts. Tastes malty, with hits of fruit, cognac, nuts, cloves, and a firm, dense finish. Solid mouthfeel. This is a top notch beer.
