Bottle. For some reason, I always tend to overlook German beers. It probably has something to do with the large glare coming from the Belgian section right next to the Germans. Whatever. This is one damn fine beer. Overactive head, but it was fluffy and dissipated rather quickly. Great aroma. Banana, bubblegum, clove and chocolate all in the nose. One of the better aromas out there. It’s a little light, and that’s the only thing keeping it from a 10. Spicy and sweet mouthfeel. Very active carbonation in the mouth as well. Great flavor to match the nose. Somewhat vinous, but not too much. Also the aforementioned chocolate, banana, bubblegum and cloves. Very good beer. This one’s for Dortmunder.

Aventinus is a dunkle weizen bockbier or "dark wheat bock beer" by style. It is one of the most complex and amazing beers that you will ever taste, and beer geeks world wide sing its praises. I have enjoyed this beer countless times here in the US, but to experience this one fresh vom fass at Weisses in Munich, was an almost spiritual experience. This beer is brewed with up to 60% dark wheat malt, along with a very distinctive ale yeast strain that produces estery aromas and flavors of clove, banana, and apple. Being a bockbier, this beer has strong aromas and flavors of alcohol, and packs quite a punch at over 8% abv. It was a phenomenal beer to match with my breakfast of sausages and pretzels, and one of the most amazing beers to ever pass my lips.
Aventinus pours to a beautiful, murky and opaque, deep caramel color, with a big, tall, rocky white head, and a vibrant carbonation. . The nose on this beer is very complex, and packed with character. Aromas of sweet malt, nutty malty, clove, and aromas of ripe banana flood the nose. This is paired with peppery hints of alcohol. The palate is smooth and round on the tongue, with big sweet and caramel malt flavors, some tart wheat malt flavor, and an underpinning of estery fruit. Aventinus finishes with more complex and delicious, malt and fruit flavors, then ends with a slightly warming, malty and clove spicy finish that lingers.
A true master piece of the brewer’s art, this beer fresh vom fass was a truly special beer. If that were not enough, around 10am, a lederhosen clad Ompah band walks in, sets up at a table directly behind where I was seated, and strikes up the music. The combination of the atmosphere, food, music, happy people, and of course beer, was without question one of the most, or perhaps even, the most amazing beer drinking experiences of my life. My friend, a veteran of Munich beer halls, commented to me, "This is not done for tourists you know. Look around you. There are no tourists in here. This is what Bavarians do.". If you ever decided to venture to Germany, a trip to Weisses Brauhaus is a must, and Aventinus is a must try. I enjoyed a few liters of this beer, as well as Schneider Weisse. We had such a great time, we didn’t get out of there until about Noon, and to say I left blissful, is an under statment of a life time.

Bottle: Dark amber, small but stable off-white head; vinous nose (Port), aromas of dried fruit (raisins) and bananas; slightly sweetish and moderate fruity flavour, medium to full bodied; sweet malty, distinctive fruity and a bit yeasty finish, some faint illusions of cloves. Yeah, a devilishly deceptive and moreish Weizen Bock !

I can’t believe I have not rated this yet. Nose ansd taste are both laden with something I might expext from a Westy 8. Loads of dark fruit and exotic spices.There is an undertone of terra firma.

Bottle. This came highly recommended from a waitress who as well is a beer hound. This is her fave, and I must say, it is one of my new favourites as well now! Very nice dark brown pour (from the bottle), good head. Very, very satisfying, filling flavour.

"MMMMMMMMM poured a dark red/brown color with a nice tan head which left some lacing. Aroma was good cloves and dark fruits. Flavor was good real good, yeasty sweet some banana? A complex beer which was great. "

My new favorite. IMO tastes best if it warms up a little. Strong initial taste(high alcohol content?), but really good. If you are in the DFW area, $3.39 at World Market!

Alight cloudy brown pour with a large off-white head. Has aroma of banana and nuts. flavor was malty but very pleasing. A great choice for any occasion.

On Tap at Flying Pie on Fairview: This wonderfully expensive ($5 for 12 oz) and tasty beer is cloudy brown as seen in the picture. It has rich aromas of dates, figs and olives. It has other complexities in the tastes such as a small dose of saddle soap and grass clipping. It has a sweet finish and hides the 8% alcohol well. It has a slight silage aftertaste that flirts with a hefeweizen. Pretty good.

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2006 This beer is very similar to and is as complex tasting as some of the best Belgian Strong Dark Ales that I’ve had. It has a little more Caramel malt flavors tho and a stronger banana /yeasty ester flavor base. A damn Good brew no doubt. A little on the sweet side, but in this beer that isn’t a bad thing at all, in fact it defines the brew.
