Bottle. Unclear brown with a large tan head. The nose has lots of barrel; oak, white wood, grapes, leather. All over the place. Taste is kind of strange. It is sour, but also fat which is an odd mix. It starts sour then turns sticky sweet and leaves a greasy mouthfeel. Flavour has some barnyard, band aid, oak, grain, hay, grapes, red apples. Long bretty and finish with oak notes. Too fat and greasy for me, but fun enough to try.

Bottle(vintage 2013):Ruby-amber coloured, hazy, mid-sized and slowly collapsing off-white loose head; balsamic vinegar, dried fruits and traces of barrique in the nose; moderate to solid sour-sweet flavour, medium bodied; lingering sour-vinegary and fruity finish , caramel barely detectable. A bavarian Red Sour Ale! Superb stuff…

Amber coloured beer with off-white head. Aroma of red fruit. Taste is fresh fruity. Cherries with a sour undertone.

Bottle, assumedly fresh, drunk 8/15/15 at OEC Sour Fest. Listed as Aventinus Cuvee Barrique - weizenbock blended with eisbock and aged in Chardonnay barrels for 8 months.
There were a lot of things to like about these sours/barrel-aged beers at OEC fest, comprised mostly of Italian and Belgian beer with a smattering of German ones. Unfortunately, a lot to dislike. Or perhaps I’ve just grown out of really caring for a lot of particular barrel-aged beers. Like Spike and Jerome’s, Dama a bruna, cuvee freddy, morpheus undressed and Abbaye de St. Bon Chien 2013, this was just another undercarbonated, oxidized, soggy, dull, grapey-fruity old barleywine-esque beer. Most of these or maybe all, were not over-barreled, which is admirable, but they’re just heavy, watery and provide so little in the way of brightness or levity on the palate. Sure, you may say, ’they’re more akin to drinking a good wine or port" but I’m not trying to drink that, I’m trying to drink a beer. Even the best imperial stouts, which aren’t exactly brimming with levity, still provide a good body, carbonation and balance/dryness. Really over these types of beers...

Bottle named Tap X Mein Aventinus Barrique (2014). A reddish brown beer, a head is small and beige. Aroma has berries and red currants, cherries, sourness, some earthyness, lether and dry barrel. Taste has cherries and berries, medium sourness, some wine vinegar, hint of fruitness of prunes. Medium bodied, not sticky, sparkling carbonation. This has nothing to do with weizenbock, more like as Sour/Flemish Red. Very confusing how mix of Aventinus and Aventinus Eisbock has been produced with aging this kind of beer which has no nuancees from original beers. Anyway, I like the style and also this beer is just great.

Really surprised by this one. Poured a slightly hazy orange with a white head. Aroma was of red wine, dark fruits, oak caramel and yeast. Flavor similar, wine barrel definitely plays a part here, woody and fruity. Highly complex.

Bottle shared. Brownish red pour. Aromas of sour dark fruits and berries. Taste is light sourness mixed with sweetness. Really well balanced.

Muddy brownish color with little foam. Sour smell. The taste is light, sour, a little malty with a thick full mouth feeling. Sour, dry and a little heavy aftertaste.

Bottle at SinH4?s Goodbye Event. Hints of vinegar in the aroma, but not in a stenchy way. Beautiful sourness and well balanced. Very distinct from the regular Aventinus Eisbock, and in a good way still!

Brown-reddish color with beige ring. Red berries, malts, tartness, berries, cherries funk. Taste is more of the same, vanilla and oak noticeable. A Flanders-red style Weizenbock? Amaaaazing!
