COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bourbon Barrel Aged Winter Ale. Need you say more? A big brother to Hoppy Holidays, this winter ale has gained a level of complexity and intrigue during those months luxuriating in its bourbon barrel haven. Chocolate malt and a healthy dose of hops help maintain balance.

People’s Choice Award 1st and 3rd place. Winter Beer Festival. 2008/2009

Note: ABV from 7% to 9% in the 2011 version.

Pour out of 22 oz bottle, dark brownish black pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of wood, green bean, hints of earth, chocolate, hints of oak, slight spicy notes, touch of roast. Taste is a mix of dark chocolate, roast, some green bean and vegetal notes into wood, earth, hints of spice, finishing bitter, slightly dry.

Bottle:   Deep dark ruby, thin frothy off-white head, spotty lacing.   Soft bourbon nose, a little apple or pear skin.   Faint fruity hop aspect too.   Pale bourbon like notes on the tongue.   Not as big as I was hoping for a 9% Winter Ale.   Really needs to be maltier, chewier, and doesn’t feel like 9% whatsoever.   No warming, no heat.   Malty, slightly mealy finish, with a grainy background.   Hops are... light.   I am not sure what to make of this.   Bourbon isnt strong enough, base isnt malty or chewy enough, grainy malt bill, without much hop presense.   Not a real fan...

Solid effort. The aroma is fairly mild for a bourbon barreled beer. Beautiful dark auburn color though. It’s a little thin for what I look for in a barreled beer, it disappears quickly in your palate. Carbonation is nice. Overall it is an enjoyable beer but not up to the standards of the better bourbon barreled beers. A gentle introduction to the uninitiated.

On draught at St. John winter fest - pours dark brown with medium thick head. Nose of booze, caramel, and yeast. Taste of booze and brown sugar. Warning effect. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nocturne (1773) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - SEP 20, 2013
On tap at APEX, PDX. This is a dark, hazy brownish red shade. A ring of head lurks at the edges. Aroma features bourbon and cocoa. Taste brings up bourbon, wet hops, cherry, chocolate and a slight umami, meaty character. Maybe even a hint of sourness. Lots going on, but drinkability isn’t the highest. Intriguing stuff.

On tap @ Stumbling Monk. Pours murky brown with a slight reddish hue. Thin creamy head. Aroma is sweet smoky bourbon. Strong but not overwhelming. Taste is well balanced between chocolately slightly spicy roasty malts, bitter hops, and big bourbon finish. I talked to the owner a couple of weeks ago and was told that the barrel-aged portion of this beer has been cranked up over the past two years; to 2/3 of the finished product for 2012 version. Can’t complain with these results, though I do recall some previous years’ iterations of this being pure bourbon bombs, so who knows. This is better balanced.

On draught at Plew’s Brews’ St. Johns Winter Beer Festival. Good Bourbon flavor and dark malt notes, very little hop bitterness.

Tap @ The BeerMongers... Poured deep, ruby with a moderate, light tan head. Nose had whiskey-alcohol notes. Nice sweetness from malt/vanilla/bourbon up front. Some bitterness half way through and it was balanced or cut nicely by some oak/woodiness. Hoppy the Woodsman lives up to his name.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a lightly hazed, richer brown colored body with a finger-width, creamy, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is bourbon and sweeter caramels with some chocolate, a moderate vanilla and oak, and touches of roast. Flavor is similar. Lots of bourbon and sweeter caramels and toffees up front. A good amount of wood, some chocolate, vanilla, and earth before this finishes dry and woody with lots of bourbon and sweeter caramels as well as a touch of roast. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-thin body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid barrel-aged beer. Lots of bourbon and wood with a sweeter malt backing to balance. Nice one.
