COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bourbon Barrel Aged Winter Ale. Need you say more? A big brother to Hoppy Holidays, this winter ale has gained a level of complexity and intrigue during those months luxuriating in its bourbon barrel haven. Chocolate malt and a healthy dose of hops help maintain balance.

People’s Choice Award 1st and 3rd place. Winter Beer Festival. 2008/2009

Note: ABV from 7% to 9% in the 2011 version.

Bottle:   Deep dark ruby, thin frothy off-white head, spotty lacing.   Soft bourbon nose, a little apple or pear skin.   Faint fruity hop aspect too.   Pale bourbon like notes on the tongue.   Not as big as I was hoping for a 9% Winter Ale.   Really needs to be maltier, chewier, and doesn’t feel like 9% whatsoever.   No warming, no heat.   Malty, slightly mealy finish, with a grainy background.   Hops are... light.   I am not sure what to make of this.   Bourbon isnt strong enough, base isnt malty or chewy enough, grainy malt bill, without much hop presense.   Not a real fan...

Draft at special brews. Pours nearly black with a loose sudsy off white head. Mild sweet bourbon, cola, and date nose. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Cola, dates, nuts, and vanilla on the mid palate. Mild and restrained.

Draft at Beveridge Place Pub. Yeah, this beer is a total mess. I really want to root for the local, too. Murky brown with a thick, creamy, webby tan head. Big sour brune ale nose: tart and puckery, along with some earthy wet leaves. Creamy medium body. Grain husk, earth, wet leaves, saurkraut, and a few other things that don’t belong make up the mid-palate.

Draft@ Taphouse Grill 98004. Hazy light brown color/ beige head. Bourbon, caramel, vanilla aromas. medium bodied. Soft bourbon, vanilla, caramel, woody, malty flavors, not too much booze here--good.

220z bomber c/o Elise. 2013 Vintage. Cherry brown-burgundy body. Big, fluffy beige head. Kind of a mellow aroma...caramel, chocolate, oak, whiskey. Sweet and rich, but somewhat delicate on the palate still. The big brown winter ale still shows, luscious brown malt tones, and it has a pleasant balance to it. Doesn’t have that taste like they threw a liter of booze into the barrel to prime it. A really easy drinking 9% beer, smooth and easy on the palate. Good stuff. Never a sugar bomb or cloying, which is rare for the style in my opinion.

Tap @ The BeerMongers... Poured deep, ruby with a moderate, light tan head. Nose had whiskey-alcohol notes. Nice sweetness from malt/vanilla/bourbon up front. Some bitterness half way through and it was balanced or cut nicely by some oak/woodiness. Hoppy the Woodsman lives up to his name.

Maroon-amber body. It does have a nice amber-malt, woodsy, hoppy aroma. Decent malt-backbone with a well-rounded hoppy-emphatic flavor. Medium-bodied, even luscious.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a lightly hazed, richer brown colored body with a finger-width, creamy, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is bourbon and sweeter caramels with some chocolate, a moderate vanilla and oak, and touches of roast. Flavor is similar. Lots of bourbon and sweeter caramels and toffees up front. A good amount of wood, some chocolate, vanilla, and earth before this finishes dry and woody with lots of bourbon and sweeter caramels as well as a touch of roast. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-thin body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid barrel-aged beer. Lots of bourbon and wood with a sweeter malt backing to balance. Nice one.
