Commercial Description:
This is a California Common Lager and can essentially be thought of as a "Pale Ale" Lager. Although lager yeast are used, it is brewed at warmer ale like temperatures and showcases Northern Brewer Hops and a distinct caramel malt character. This style of beer was popularized by Anchor Steam of San Francisco. The owner of Anchor Steam, Fritz Maytag, subsequently trademarked the use of the word "steam" to describe this style of beer. Now the rest of the world must refer to their versions as a "California Common".

A really good clone of anchor steam. Sweet malt aroma and taste. An eminently drinkable lager.

Draft @ the brewpub. Pours an amber color with small off-white head. Has a malty caramel aroma with some hoppy hints. Sweetish malty caramel flavor with some grainy hints. Has a malty caramel finish with some hoppy hints.

On tap @ Schooners. Amber with a thin, broken off-white head. Lightly grainy nose backed some grassy earthy hops. Mild sweet malts on the taste, accented nicely by a lightly floral hop component. A nice take on the style.

Pours a decent caramel golden color with a nose of malt and doughy biscuits. The flavor is the same, with a caramel influence as well sweetening it a bit more. Nice beer.

Tasted from fresh growler. This California Common pours a dark copper gold color. Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is caramel, toffee and bready. Medium bodied common. Malts are fruity and sweet. It has that fruity estery flavor of a steam beer. Hops are floral and earthy. Soft malt flavors that kind of just fade away. Nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

On tap @ Hopyard Pleasanton poured a clear copper with a small lingering off white head. Aromas of carmel, bread and light fruitiness. Palate was light to medium bodied and crisp. Flavors of bread, light carmel and a hint of fruitiness with a crisp lightly bitter finish.

Can you say very good Steam Beer. Too bad Fritz copyrighted the name. Malt forward with caramel and biscuit notes. Perfect balanced hopping that compliments the wonderful mouthfell. Well done Craig.
