Bottle 33cl shared by Calisky. A dark beer with low head. Nose is intense on burnt barley sugar and alcohol. Aroma is on burnt barley sugar, smoked notes, sweating notes, licorice wood, soy sauce, dark caramel, old grapes, kind of sourish / tart finish, not really tasty.

Dark brown color with a small but lasting white head. Aroma is alcoholish and sharp, some spices, roast, caramel. Heavy body, very sweet and thick, finishes with a harsh alcoholtaste and too much sweetness.

Despite the high alcohol content, then this almost black doppelbock still have a little creamy foam layer on top. It has a very delicate aroma of dried fruit and smoked malt. Vinous strong mouth feel, and especially the alcohol in the first place provides a heat. After that you can taste good notes of caramel and dried fruits. Especially figs and prunes can be recognized in the flavor. The finish is slightly acidic and semi-dry, and gives associations towards the use of Brett (wild yeast Brettanomyces). But it is clearly on the label that it is brewed under the kaw of purity (reinheitsgebot) so Brett is quite likely excluded. At the label it can also be read that it should be served ice cold. I think it is a sin for a doppelbock so atypical as this, but I would concur that it can easily be enjoyed anything colder than you usually would choose the type, for just its distinctive and fullness you get in abundance, even in colder state.

0.5l ceramic swingtop bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. This one pours a really deep, quite cloudy dark bronze colored body with only a small quickly sidesticking off-white top. Smells a tad weird. Wet newspapers, lots of bitter nuts, some burned sugar and traces of booze. Not the best aroma I’ve nosed. By far. It doesn’t taste all that nice either to be honest. Lots of sourness. Not sour but more acidic. It’s quite thin and a bit flat in the mouth. Traces of old chocolate and burned sugars. The sourness can remind of something lightly smoked. It’s not something I feel any urge to drink again. 19.03.2014
