2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Black body with a short-lived medium tan head. Leathery and wet cloth on the nose. Even all the roasted malts in the world cannot hide the typical Schoune yeast (unfortunately). Overly-roasted malts prevents a creamy body. Fruity yeast omnipresent. Flavours or ripe fruits abound (prunes, grapes, etc.). Maybe too ripe. Some rot flavour in the after-taste. Alcohol very well hidden. Kind of weird but its qualities are as numerous as its problems. Schoune can do worst, trust me they really can.

Herb-malziger, ziemlich cremiger Beginn, rund, breit, angenehme Röstigkeit. Geringer Alkohol, leckere holzige Röstnoten. Weich, gut! 12/12/12/12/7/12

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Originally rated November 2006. Finally, a Schoune brew that is above average and that does not seem infected (helping is the 8.5% ABV). Pours a black colour with a slim highlight of red. The head is brown and creamy, with good retention and nice mountainy lace. The main aroma I get is quite nutty, with some roasted malt, molasse, coffee and a bit of chocolat. Thick enough mouthfeel and full-bodied. Great taste of dark malts, roasted, chocolat and burnt. Also found is coffee, molasse and tobacco flavours. A very smooth Imperial Stout. I would have this brew anytime.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours a coal gray brown with a thin beige head- thins out. Aroma is fruity esters, with light dusty earthy chocolate, burnt toast, and light caramel. Flavor is sweet, brown sugar, candy sugar, chocolate, roast, oily, light dusty chocolate but it is subtle, some hints of smokey tar, and a thin slick finish. Meh

Noire foncée avec une mousse épaisse de couleur beige. Goût de café grillé avec un arrière goût légèrement amère.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Nice dark pour with thin tan head. Aroma of chocolate. Thin and watery with biscuity malt and bitter chocolate. Not horrible, but not my favorite.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
They didn’t really outdo themselves on the marketing front, did they? Nevertheless, this is a decent-looking beer, but quite flat. Somewhat sour and thin, but disguised by the overwhelming surfeit of chocolate, coffee and roasted flavours. A bit of hops. No alcohol was noticed at all. I liked it, although it’s a bit cheap. They just tossed in some sweet malt flavourings and forgot about the rest.

341ml bottle shared courtesy of dickinsonbeer. Poured a dark, dark brown color (almost black) with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of roast, chocolate, caramel, and somewhat floral. Tastes of the same with some dark fruits.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Thanks to dickinsonbeer. Pours a deep brown with a smaller bubbly/creamy lighter tan head that left some lace. Aroma of caramel, some orange, chocolate, floral notes a bit leathery. Flavor of dark fruits, cocoa notes, chocolate, some hops, alcohol really not there.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured a black opaque ale with a 2 finger mocha cap which has short retention and goes to a surface lace.
Aroma is Musty-sweet with dried fruits, chocolate, some leafy floral hops...and our old nemesis fusil alcohol.
Profile is like so many other Imps; roast cocoa, coffee, dried fruits, chewing tobacco, piney/cedar hops...long wet charred finish...but this one hides its alcohol in the flavor very well....but it has this incredulous subtle smoke to it that carries through the entire profile.
Probably the first Schoune beer I enjoyed.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Black in colour with a thin beige coloured head, light lacing around the top of the glass. The aroma is chocolaty, some liquorice, cake, moderate sweetness, some light alcohol. The flavour is moderatly sweet, lightly bitter once the sweetness leaves, lot of chocolate, molasses, burnt malts, some alcohol. Bitter mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes moderatly bitter, lingering, some alcohol. Pretty good for a beer from Schoune.
