TAR (2499) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - DEC 11, 2013
Draught at Hütt’n, Nuremberg, Autumn 2011: Rusty gold. Fine ring of foam mostly diminishes. Pleasant nose of cookie, breadcrust, unsweetened chocolate, tobacco, pecan, toffee, unsweetened chocolate. Hint of licorice hops. Slightly husky. Soft carbonation. Firmly bodied. Initially dry yet fully malty with edgy notes of breadcrust adorned with deep, crisp, well-defined toasty Munich. Dab of toasted hay meshes with a browned toffee richness which gains more complexity as a touch of tobacco and unsweetened chocolate sneak in. Snap of minerals dovetails with the dry breadcrusty malt, but some limpness and huskiness become apparent as you sit with it. Finishes with a yeasty bite along with grass clippings, aniselike hop whispers, and perpetual toffee. A mixed bag. The Munich character is quite sublime at times, but there’s some distracting flabbiness and huskiness that keeps this from being really enjoyable for me. A middle-of-the-road landbier.

Flasche von Hopfen & Malz, Berlin. - Tiefes Kupferrot.

Ernest (6231) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 10, 2013
Bottle. Head is initially small, fizzy/frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is clear medium amber. Aroma is lightly malty (caramel, toasted grain), lightly hoppy (apricot, flowers). Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately bitter. Light body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Very light-bodied and characterless...reasonably pleasant aroma but very little of it. Quite bland in the mouth. No apparent flaws, just really dull (despite being 4 months away from the BB date). Drinkable, but that’s about it...the definition of average.
