4.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 20/20
One of my favorite beers of all time. Drank this while on a trip to Berlin, at a bar I just happened to wander into. From the presentation (stem Schultheiss glass with gold trim and a Schulthiess paper "bib" around the bottom) to the head, to the temperature, to the finish, this beer is to me fantastic. While it is indeed a very dark beer, the flavor is quite light, possibly due to the high carbonation. This beer is ideal served highly chilled, and should have around a 1/2 inch head when pulled from the tap. Very nice.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Sampled this one on draught at a tavern in Berlin. Excellent example of schwarzbier, with lots of good dark malt aromas and flavors, and a touch of roast. Schultheiss Lager Schwarz pours to a beautiful, bright, deep brown to black color, with a thick white head, and a good bit of carbonation. The nose on this beer is excellent ,with good dark chocolate and nutty malt aroma, paired with light aromas of roast. The palate is polished and clean, with a sea of smooth dark malt flavor, coffee, and mild roast. This beer finishes with more of that great dark malt flavor, then ends bone dry and slightly roasty. An excellent schwarzbier, that works well with a number of hearty dishes. A great before and after dinner beer as well.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Faint roasted malt aroma. Opaque body. Large, light-brown head; mostly lasting. Good lace. Very light flavor for a dark beer. Has that non-pasteurized, yummy German draft beer finish. A little too light in body, but worth a quaff.

6/19/03, draft, Berlin. I've noticed that everything is better in an enjoyable context - in this case a wonderful German restaurant with good company. Dark brown lager, almost opaque with large white head. Aroma is heavily toasted malts, caramel, apple, oranges and balancing hops. Roasted sweet malt flavor with honey, smoke and citrus. Medium body and creamy in the mouth.

drank it from the can so my appearance rating may be off a little. but a simple enough style that a glass shouldnt make all that much difference. i foudn this one pretty good. malty and smooth. started out a little rough but got smoother as it warmed.

UPDATED: JUL 12, 2015 Had this in Berlin in a cafe outside one of the museums on the Island. Not too bad. Slight mineral metallic taste(not in a bad way) Slight roasted flavor. Maybe not the strongest example of Schwarzbier but quite drinkable. Serving: Tap

Draught from the Alte Kantine in Berlin’s Kulturbrauerei. Somewhat subdued notes, even for a Schwarz, very quaffable. Lightly roasted, a touch of chocolate, light and smooth. Would like to re-rate from the bottle.
