Tasting notes: Pours a hazy deep red color with a bubbled white head. Sweet full aroma of malt and caramel, some toffee notes, a touch of dark chocolate. The flavor is sweet malty, proceeds to a gentle bitterness with some roasted touches, quite a dry finish. Mouthfeel is quite thin but not disturbing, however the flavors would come out better if it was a bit fuller. Together with the long dry finish however does the thin mouthfeel make the beer very drinkable.
Conclusion: A decent good drinkable beer with a long lasting dry finish.

AB InBev’s recreation of a beer by the long-closed brewery Wielemans which had been in existence since 1926, hence the old-fashioned label. Pale beige, creamy, thinnish head, colour very dark mahogany, clear with no real fizz. Sweet and malty aroma of caramel, chocolate liqueur, raisins, candied figs, brandy, cake, meat broth, fried eggs, candi syrup, cloves, dried orange peel, ginger powder and the expected pasteurization. Soft sweet taste of obvious candi syrup (which has likely been used for colour), raisins but no ’real’ living fruitiness, something artificially sweet not unlike aspartame, very caramelly, a bit metallic, rather thin body with low carbo, straightforward but becoming more dryish towards the end, somewhat chalky, leafy hop bitterishness and a touch of roasted bitterness, but the candi syrup sweetness cloys a bit and dominates the finish. Feels artificial like most of AB InBev’s products, but it does reflect a forgotten tradition of ’Belgian Scotch’ beers; reminds me a bit of Gordon Finest Scotch or Watneys Scotch Ale. Not the worst I had from AB InBev, I must admit - but a watered down and industrial beer if compared with the legion of Belgian winter ales which are actually Scotch-style, but refuse to admit it.

Keg at Kunstemaecker, Steenkerke, 17/10/14. Rich mahogany brown with a decent beige covering. Nose is sweet maltings, dark fruit, brown sugar, nutty tang, brown bread, toffee. Taste comprises mellow dark fruits, nutty, toasted brown sugar, fruit loaf. Medium bodied, fine carbonation with light spritz keeping the sweetness at bay slightly and upping the drinkability. Ok Scotch Ale (whatever the fuck they are) !

On tap. Brown red colour with beige head. Malt , caramel dark fruit aroma. Taste quite sweet to start - caramel becoming quite bitter in the finish. Slightly harsh. Thin mouthfeel. Ok. Just that

Draught @ Le Trappiste, Brugge. Pours slightly hazy dark ruby / copper brown with small off-white head. Clear aroma of fruit with some vinous touches and notes of malt and hops. Sweetish flavour of fruit and malt, with notes of hops and some sourish touches. Sour-sweetish finish. OK but just that for the style.
