mds (2111), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 31, 2007 Cask. Pretty much the end of the cask so this stuff was pretty rough and murky, a brownish-copper colour with a surprisingly large frothy white head.
The aroma had a shit tonne of grapefruit, orange, pineapple, and biscuit. Very green, piney flavour with some bread backing but it’s predominately bitter. Overwhelmingly bitter, almost. Finishes with some dark malt notes and leafy hops. jerc (3071), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 30, 2007 Cask @ Volo. Dark amber-copper body with a moderate off white to beige head. Hoppy aroma is quite green and leafy, with light woody caramel notes to the malt. Fairly bitter flavour is strong, but actaully relatively tame by Scotch Irish one-off standards. Very light, not quite astringent bitter grapefruit notes and muted resin character, lots more green leafy hops in the flavour. A different hop mix than the usual provides an interesting change. Average palate. Interesting, but it I didn’t care for the warmer bottom half of the glass as much as the first. 7/3/7/3/15 mabel (1391), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 29, 2007 [563-20070827] Cask @ Volo (Toronto, ON, tapped 3-4 days prior). Citrus lemony leaf hops aroma. Slightly hazy with big hop-flaky floaties, amber brown body with a long-lasting foamy off-white head. Orange and lemon fleshy fruit flavour base with some woodsy resin and a slightly soapy hazelnut aftertaste. Medium-full body has a bitter finish. Very interesting melee. HogTownHarry (3146), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Aug 28, 2007 Cask. At Volo. It had been tapped the night before and was quite fresh. Poured extremely murky borwnish-orange with a large (for cask) frothy beige head - looked great to this thirsty guy (4+). This is a bitter? Lush, pungent funky/herbal/slightly burnt hop aroma, plenty of resiny acidity in there, some cereal grain malt backing, but this is about the hops. The taste - really quite the same - acidic fresh hops, with a real back-palate funky/herbal thang that just grabbed my tongue and said "I’m here to stay - and you want another of me" - who was I to argue! Thick, chewy, acidic body, with an interestingly dry aftertaste (didn’t TASTE dry) - as Doug says, in no way was this balanced, but it was brashly cheerful about the whole thing; I am A-hops - drink me if you dare! Loved it. DougShoemaker (2553), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 28, 2007 Cask @ Volo
Aroma is a lovely fresh, wet hops with some fine malt, cloudy brown,(I had the last full pint from the cask) pours a firm, long lasting custard head. Tons of floaties. A massive bitter smash in the mouth, much to my liking. Hugely bitter, over the top, not the least bit balanced, but enjoyed most heartily. Thanks Perry for always taking a walk on the wild side...doo da doo da doo da doo...
